Of course, the main pattern that the west and north of Poland is more "left wing/ "pro Europe" than the east is visiblie in the other elections too, but this nice overlapping with the pre WWI German-Russian border has only been prominent in 2007 and 2011, which may be an incident of that the country has been polarizing or that the right (and the vanishing of the mere protest parties and the consolidation of the sane behind the PO and the others behind the PiS. (Sounds very American, doesn't it?).

What is the story behind this "county" at the eastern border which has "Left Democrats" as the strongest party from 2001 to 2011

Hajnowski County is officially and effectively a bilingual county (Polish "Powiat" indeed translates as "County").

OK, here's the 2001 Sejm map. Not very complicated, given SLD-UP has carried all districts (and won nationwide with 41,04% v. nearest competitior with 12,68%)

Since SLD-UP swept all the Sejm districts in 2001, for balance here is a map of who came in second



Orange: PO
Yellow: Samoobrona
Green: PSL
Blue: PiS
Light gray: LPR
Gray: German Minority

Note: German Minority runs only in Opole district where it's, as a minority committee, exempted from a 5% nationwide threshold

Think SLD has the biggest downfall from power in 2005? No, that honor goes to AWS, which in four years went from winning an election to getting purged from the Sejm altogether (as AWSP).
