In honor of some of the men (and they seem to all be men) who Chris Christie and Bob McDonnell may or may not be joining the ranks of in the future.

Rod Blagojevich (D-Illinois)

In Office: 2003-2009
Political Outcome: removed from office by the state legislature
His Crimes: Racketeering; wire fraud; extortion and attempted extortion; giving false statements to federal law enforcement; after Barack Obama resigned from the US Senate in 2008 to become President of the United States, Blagojevich used his power to appoint a replacement to seek out bribes from interested parties, including cash payments for himself and his political campaign, and appointments for himself and his wife to corporate boards of directors and the post of US Ambassador to Serbia (where Blagojevich's parents were born).
His Sentence: 14 years in federal prison
Where is he now?: In prison since 2012.

Edwin Edwards (D-Louisiana)

In Office: 1972-1980, 1984-1988, 1992-1996
Political Outcome: Retired from office after four non-consecutive terms
His Crimes: Racketeering; extortion; mail fraud; wire fraud; money laundering; Edwards accepted money from people including a Texas for-profit prison operator and an NFL team owner in exchange for prison contracts and casino licenses.
His Sentence: 10 years in federal prison (2001-2011)
Where is he now?Sad Released from prison in 2011; Completed parole in 2013; Edwards lives with his much younger wife whom he married while in prison. The 86 year-old may be considering a return to politics.

H. Guy Hunt (R-Alabama)

In Office: 1987-1993
Political Outcome: resigned following 1993 felony conviction (Alabama does not allow convicted felons to hold public office)
His Crimes: state ethics law violations relating to his use of state funds and resources such as government-owned aircraft for personal use
His Sentence: $12,000 fine and 5 years probation
Where is he now?Sad Hunt was pardoned in 1997 and attempted a comeback, running for governor in 1998 but losing the GOP primary to incumbent governor Fob James. He died of lung cancer in 2009.

John G. Rowland (R-Connecticut)

In Office: 1995-2004
Political Outcome: resigned during concurrent state and federal criminal investigations against him
His Crimes: honest services fraud; Rowland illegally accepted gifts in the form of renovations to his personal residence, invested in companies he knew were about to be granted state contracts and sold a Washington, DC condo at an above-market price to a supporter.
His Sentence: 1 year in federal prison; 4 months house arrest; 3 years community service
Where is he now?: Having completed his prison and house arrest sentences in 2006, Rowland still lives in Connecticut and hosts a conservative talk radio show.

George Ryan (R-Illinois)

In Office: 1999-2003
Political Outcome: Did not seek re-election
His Crimes: Racketeering; extortion; tax fraud; money laundering; obstruction of justice; Ryan used campaign contributions to pay his personal expenses, used his authority to award state contracts to friends and political allies, and demanded bribes from citizens and businesses to obtain state licenses. This behavior stretched back to Ryan's time as Illinois Secretary of State from 1991-1999, much of which formed the basis for his indictment a few months after finishing his term as governor.
His Sentence: 6.5 years in federal prison (2007-2013)
Where is he Now?Sad Living alone in his hometown of Kankakee, Illinois. Ryan's wife died of cancer while he was in prison.

I am curious, does anyone know the first governor to be convicted and removed from office for fraud or bribery or whatever they called malfeasance back in the day.

William Woods Holden of North Carolina was the first US governor to be removed from office, in 1870. It appears the impeachment was motivated moreso by unreconstructed Democrats with sour grapes who seized an opportunity to remove the Republican governor from office, than by graft or fraud.

Governor David Butler (R-Nebraska) was impeached and removed from office in 1871. It appears his charges were more substantiated - he used public school funds to purchase real estate for himself.

And they say today's climate is more polarized and partisan.

And Don Siegelman, although the fairness of his conviction is disputed.

Not to long after that a mob Democrats of led by a former Confederate General, murdered a bunch of Black people and took over the town of Wilmington. And in the 1880's there was almost a gun battle over who was the rightful Governor of Texas.
