Of the readings in the
Revised Common Lectionary for 28 January 2014 (Tuesday after the Third Sunday after Epiphany), I chose to reflect on Philippians 2:12-18.
Do everything without grumbling or arguing Philippians 2:14
Men do tend to be an argumentative lot. Indeed, given our free will, it is inevitable that there will be disagreements. So what is Paul getting at here⸮ I submit that it is not a mindless allegiance to do as Christ ordains, but rather that once the decision has been made to follow Christ, to do so with a whole heart and without endless second guessing. The relevant quote does not say "decide" everything without grumbling or arguing but "do" everything without grumbling or arguing. That's good advice for pretty much all decisions. Certainly there is nothing to be gained from such bickering after a decision has been made unless new information not previously available to us becomes available.
