Fluke is of course the best candidate for this seat, because she'll make the Republicans say horribly sexist things non-stop for the next 8 months.

I'd think Wendy Gruel would make Conservatives say the same things... And she's already in the race.

Any chance we could get say four Democrats and two Republicans to run and then have the two Republicans face off against each other in the runoff of the jungle primary?

There was some excitement about this possibility on RRH, but the predominant thought was this could only happen if one of the Republicans is at least semi-prominent (a Bloomfield I run, or apparently Steve Cooley lives in this district, though he won't run).

If Bloomfield runs, could he be considered the favorite?

Bloomfield only did so well because he caught Waxman sleeping. A Democrat will succeed Waxman, no matter what.

Nobody outside of LA except maybe some of us knows who Wendy Greuel is. For all intents and purposes she's a local figure running for an LA seat in Congress. Sandra Fluke is a national figure that conservatives have hated for years.

The point is... if they're going to say that about one woman... why wouldn't they say such things about any other woman?

I'm not denying that they wouldn't. I'm saying that there's going to be a huge ripple effect to other races if a national figure gets the nomination than a local one. A chorus of conservatives across the nation slut-shaming someone will make the GOP look HORRIBLE. As for Wendy Greuel, nobody outside of LA gives a sh**t about her.

Let's see.  Cornell graduate, law student, founder of organization that protects victims of domestic violence, smart, well-spoken, and respected.  Yeah, I can see why some people would have serious problems with that.

The GE shouldn't be a problem.  Here's hoping she wipes the floor in the primary.  Greuel might be a problem because although she's not a national figure, she probably is fairly well known where it matters.

Fluke is of course the best candidate for this seat, because she'll make the Republicans say horribly sexist things non-stop for the next 8 months.
We'll with that thinking, I'm inclined to support her. I guess I'm still a bit sore about the Dems devoting a night of the DNC to the "War on Women" instead of focusing entirely on the economy. It worked, so I guess it'll work again.
Endorsed.

The GOP's history on women's (as well as most social) issues is so bad they're not even allowed to talk about it in public.  Democrats don't have to go down the same route and talking about these issues has shown, as you said, to be a winning strategy.  What's wrong with having your convention focus on many issues instead of one?

My only question would be that she's not not from California, let alone the district. Isn't that a problem for her? She's an east coaster, born and raised in Pennsylvania and went to school in NY And DC. She really has no ties to the state. I guess she moved there in the last year.

Obviously, Fluke lived in LA long before Waxman announced his retirement.  This is hardly what I'd call 'carpetbagging.'

I don't know?  A year?  Two years?  That's not really the point.

Important detail: An adviser said that Fluke had to file for the party's endorsement because of a looming deadline and that she's still keeping her options open.  Technically she didn't announce, but I think at this point she's very likely to stay in the race.
