He later denied it, but this sounds like a threat to me. Senator Sanborn, like I said, is no stranger to controversy, getting into trouble for calling Governor Maggie Hassan "Haggie" and comparing Obamacare to a plane crash before this. However, this is his worst offense yet, jumping on the bully train that Chris Christie and Michael Grimm started. He only scraped by with 200 votes last year, and he's only digging his hole deeper. It's hit Esquire Magazine's political blog, and it's only starting to scrape national news.

But then again, who's surprised that someone from NH is on the bully train when the second-in-command of our state's GOP is the man who asked Sokolich for his endorsement?

Could this be extortion (legally speaking)? Is it impeachable?

No. Sanborn isn't asking for the money himself.

They do have a tendency to govern by fear.  They say that if you don't let them implement their policies, there will be crime waves, mass firings and terrorist attacks.

No, and it doesn't even rise to the level of an actual threat.  It's a veiled "threat" at best.

No, it's pretty obviously a threat. Don't try to spin this one.

I'm not spinning it, but it'd be unlikely that a lawyer could actually prove to a jury that it was a threat.

Never thought I'd be agreeing with Cory, but considering Sanborn's known for being a loose cannon, I think he meant it as a threat. It's certainly not something that the student can sue for because he hasn't lost the scholarship, but if this story blows up any further (it's reached the Boston Globe and got a bit piece in Esquire Magazine), it's enough to kill Sanborn's career and even put control of the state senate into jeopardy.

Fair enough.

"Nice scholarship you got there. Shame if something were to happen to it."
