I largely sympathise with TNF's point here, actually, that in most cases it's probably easier to do it ourselves than to pay a for profit corporation to do it. That said there will be cases where an inter city bus goes through a rural area and it's more economical to subsisidise them to introduce a stop there than to provide our own service so it's an option for the SoIA to have on the table.

I welcome any counter proposals/amendments/suggestions

I'll sponsor Bore's amendment. Senators have 24 hours to object.

I support the contents of the amendment. A private company running rural bus routes would constantly need subsidies - so why not just use the subsidies to create a nationalized one?

The amendment has been adopted.

I suspend Senate rules and remove the t behind costs in clause 3. Senators have 24 hours to object.

I think the bill is as good as we are going to get it.

At least now it is narrowly focused on a specific objective, which ironically so much of the debate was spent just trying to sort that out.

I like the steps here of building rural infrastructure. I believe that preserving rural culture is important, and giving people the means to be more in touch with urban society is important in preventing rural population decline.
