Just being better than the rest of the south isn't really a great distinction.

Which isn't even true (LA, NC)

Really it's only 2/3rds southern anymore.

Well, culture aside, Louisiana is not a very good state, poor education, health, high crime, high level of political corruption (though Bob McDonnell is trying real hard).

NC is a very interesting state because it actually made some choices and executed them to improve the state.  It certainly has the best university system in the South and the Research triangle are both outcomes of those choices.  Quite a bit of what passes for economic development is just geography and natural resources.  NC is a rare counter to that.

Massive FS. Virginia is arguably the most progressive state of the former Confederacy and I hold it in high regard for that reason.

Guys, NoVA is not a reason to vote FS. It's a reason to vote HS. It's just awful suburbia. And the rest of the state isn't much better.

It depends on what parts of NoVA you are talking. Arlington and Alexandria are essentially extentions of DC and are very urban in nature.

I can't speak to states I haven't been to, but it's my least favorite out of the ones I have. Northern Virginia is soul-sucking and the rest of the state is boring. I detest the sports teams and I dread having to visit, because being stuck in traffic for three hours on the Beltway is always a miserable experience. There's no culture to speak of, and worst of all the existence of Virginia means that we get terrible ads on TV for Ken Cuccinelli even in odd-numbered years. It's the most horrible state there is.

A microcosm of America, which is to say HS. It has absolutely nothing interesting within in its borders excepting perhaps the Norfolk Naval Yards.

What is your reason for picking that as the most interesting part of the state?

It's a shame that it includes one of America's many great (lack of) planning disaster zones. Something that's particularly unforgivable when you consider that the people who live there are bureaucrats or exist to service bureaucrats.

I like big ships and got to see some while on the bridge that goes from the tip of the Delmarva Peninsula to Virginia Beach.

So what you are saying is that Virginia is an entirely predictable mess.

Yes, those are cool, though my favorites are the Maersk cargo ships.   If you have any interest in old ships then the Mariner's Museum is awesome.

most ironic thing is urbanist liberals masturbating to the prospect of more sprawl because it will turn Virginia blue or whatever

Well, in America we plan for sprawl, that's entirely deliberate.

Though I guess it is worth mentioning that at least they are finally extending the subway out to Dulles and trying to maybe-sorta retcon Tyson's Corners into something not entirely awful, which is the baby-est of baby steps but still puts the region way ahead of many others.

Uh... also Arlington itself is actually pretty alright, by the denuded standards of this country at least?

I've had little issue with what NoVA I've actually experienced, though I'm sure I wouldn't be this charitable if I ever had occasion to set foot in Loudon County.  Oh well, ignorance is bliss, etc...

The difference between Northern Virginia and the Maryland suburbs just to the northeast is spectacular.

Personally I'd rather live in NoVa, especially Arlington or Alexandria, over PG County. That being said, I'm moving to Silver Spring in June and I am so happy to leave Foggy Bottom.

Montgomery County is one of the very, very few places in this country that has done post-WWII suburbia "right".  Really I can't think of any major examples beyond them and the Portland metro (and even then only the parts actually in Oregon).

EDIT:  Actually, dear God, the next-best example might be Utah fer Crissake, and their hand was forced by harsh geography.
