I don't see Kennedy doing much better than Carter. I also don't think he would have ever chosen McGovern as a VP choice. McGovern was destroyed by Nixon.

This scenario is VERY interesting to me, and I do think, if lightening struck and the stars aligned, that Ted Kennedy could win the election.

That being said, this map seems to be the most likely if he won the nomination. Also, I changed his VP to William Proxmire.

Kennedy/Proxmire: 270
Reagan/Bush: 268

Was Reagan more electable than Ford and Kennedy more electable than Carter? But isn't the most centrist candidate who appeals to the mythical centrist voter who votes for the most centrist candidate the most electable?

I agree that Proxmire makes the most sense for Teddy's VP of anyone I can think of.   I think Anderson still runs, with more moderate and less liberal support than against Carter.

Fmr. Gov. Reagan (R-CA)/Fmr. Amb. George H.W. Bush (R-TX)   49% 421 EV

Sen. Ted Kennedy (D-MA)/Sen. William Proxmire (D-WI)  43% 117 EV
Rep. John B. Anderson (R-IL)/Fmr. Gov. Patrick Lucey (D-WI) 6%
Lawyer Ed Clark (L-CA)/Businessman David H. Koch (L-KS) 1%

Not sure about a map, but Kennedy would win in a landslide or near-landslide by virtue of his last name and Reagan's "extreme" views.
