One should never count out their opponents, but we couldn't have gotten a more pleasent Round of 16 match!

Not that implausible if USA's path to the final ended up being Belgium-Switzerland-Mexico, all winnable. At which point all we have to do is get past Algeria. Alright maybe not that. But with the way Messi has been saving Argentina, it's as easy to imagine them winning it all as it is losing to Switzerland.

Brail's chance of beating Chile is only 2% lower than Germany's of beating Algeria? lol

I actually want to start watching soccer because of people like Coulter. Anyway, they're pushing the World Cup and soccer generally on TV. There's a commercial where a hot Brazilian (I presume) lady in a sleek dress and heels with a soccer ball walks up to some average American dudes in a variety of settings and says in her sexy accent, "Futbol." Then she gets in a sports car and drives away. Okay!

Keith Olbermann had some good tongue in cheek satirical commentary on the World Cup on ESPN2, which I found funny. I caught it last night. It went like, "Se we lost a game and tied a game and now we advance. Why? Oh, because soccer. Well how many games do we have to lose or tie before we win the World Cup?" Haha.

In that spirit, I read that we will be playing Belgium, I think, next. And after about 170 minutes and a 1-0 score, or maybe a 0-0 score, it will be decided that Belgium won and I HOPE that our farcical participation in the World Cup will come to a merciful end at that point, finally. And then France or Germany or Argentina or somebody can win the World Cup after a 0-0 championship game. Yay!

Those crazy Europeans! In the USA a team can't lose its last regular-season game and make the playoffs...

Three of the four teams I wanted to see progress did (United States, Germany, Switzerland). Spain lost, but at least I can have happy memories of winning the last World Cup and Euro Cup. Tongue

Pretty much every "never watch the sport except when the US plays in the World Cup" idiot resorted to BACK TO BACK WORLD WAR CHAMPS when Germany won.

English soccer fans taunting Germany about the World Wars was/is(?) a very common cheer when the countries played each other.

The famous England Germany Football Rivalry is, of course, entirely one way... a fact that is... um... embarrassing...

What really gets me is the disingenuous nature of so many of the Soccer haters: they mock how you can move on in the tournament after losing but several of those idiots that I have personally encountered follow the NHL which also has a points system. Hell, they get points for an (overtime) loss!

Yeah, the jokes about "we lost but advanced?" are stupid.

Is that seriously a common statement in the States? What's more amusing is they'd be bitching even more if they had been eliminated on goal difference .
