There has to be some reckoning for the fact that this is a global event more than a sporting competition. Proposing 1.5 Asian teams is ridiculous.

The AFC's level of play is hardly the same as UEFA's, which is why despite having six times more people, the AFC has one third of the places. It is already hugely balanced in favour of continents with strong history in the competition.

Discussing this like the status quo is the neutral mark is pretty ridiculous, when you think about it. The current system is already hugely weighted towards UEFA and CONMEBOL - as it should be - and any further advantage Europe and South America get would be ridiculous.

If you were to do it by population, Europe would get 3.5 spots. Seems to me that having almost half of the total is beyond a reasonable compromise for Europe's performance in rankings.

Asia hasn't deserved more spots, in a 32-team competition, but it certainly doesn't deserve 1.5.

16 Europe
5.5 South America
3.5 North America
4.5 Africa
2.5 Asia (incl. Oceania)
