Hoping Italy and Austria are in the same group. Wink

Please not ... I want an interesting group, but also one where we qualify Wink

So, no Germany and no Italy and no Spain.

Remember: with an expanded tournament, the top two teams of each group and the best ranked third place team qualify directly. The remaining third placed teams go to the playoff.

Austria has a real chance of being there in 2016. In fact, I'd be kind of surprised if a smaller team like Austria didn't make it.

Well, then we might have some chance ...

The Greece/Northern Ireland/Faroer group looks better every minute ...

The England or Bosnia groups would also be OK for us though.

Ughh, Russia, Liechtenstein, Moldova and Montenegro.

Not an attractive group, but not bad for qualifying (I guess).

The biggest thing would be if we get Switzerland !

Coach Marcel Koller is from Switzerland and we'd have Liechtenstein too.

Some facts about the Austria vs. Uruguay game tonight:

This is only the 3rd time so far that the two countries have played against each other: In 1954, Austria beat Uruguay 3-0, while in 1964 Uruguay beat Austria 2-0.

The game will be played in Klagenfurt at the Wörthersee-Arena (has 32.000 seats, but so far only about 18.000 tickets have been sold).

Cavani will miss the game for Uruguay, because of an injury.

My prediction: 2-1 Uruguay (under normal circumstances, the Urus are probably a class better)

UEFA's new "Nations League" explained:

What is the basic format?

In the UEFA Nations League, the 54 member associations will be divided into four groups based on coefficient rankings. These groups will then be further divided into playing pools of either three or four teams. The teams in each pool play each other home and away between September and December of the season in question, with the group winners either qualifying for the final four competitions or gaining promotion. The bottom sides face relegation from their division.

In addition, the UEFA Nations League will provide teams with another chance to qualify for the UEFA EURO final tournament. Four teams within each group, who have not already qualified for the finals, will qualify for play-offs in March 2020 with one team from each group joining the 20 teams who had qualified via the European Qualifiers.

What are the next steps?

Following the acceptance of the resolution on national team football at the XXXVIII Ordinary UEFA Congress in Astana on 27 March 2014, UEFA and its member associations will continue to work together to elaborate and implement the UEFA Nations League. It is envisaged that the first UEFA Nations League matches would take place in September 2018.

Not related, but Austria beat the Czech Republic yesterday abroad with 2-1.

There's some hope for us that we could finally end up at an EURO again, with the way we are playing right now.

Austria is now unbeaten since the last 5 games (beat the US, Czech Republic and Faroer Islands and tied Uruguay and Iceland recently).

The next stop is Sweden on Sept. 8, when the EURO 2016 qualifiers start.
