http://us.cnn.com/2014/01/21/us/florida-teen-suspended-porn/?iref=obnetwork

He was bullied by his fellow students, and then the principal (purportedly) told him he was being expelled for his explicit lifestyle career... He was cleared of suspicion (whatever that means) on Monday, and returned to school today.

Is this an abuse of power by the school?

I don't have said X-Rated video... sorry ladies and lady-men

Yep. And Unconstitutional. And the school district basically admitted that. You can suspend an adult from a public school to which he is otherwise entitled by law to go for what he does legally outside the classroom! Who knew?

Odd the kid was "bullied" when it come out. I would have thought he would get high fives. Maybe he wasn't very good or something. Tongue

Am I the only one sick and tired of how schools are increasingly punishing kids for something that happened outside of school on their free time? It's like they think they have authority over the kids outright and not just in school.

It's one thing if this were illegal... but this was completely legal, and presumably above-board... so the school district should have no jurisdiction.

The whole thing is ridiculous.  I don't get why schools can't stick to the teaching while parents stick to the parenting.  Unless someone is getting hurt, the school should mind its own business.

He kind of wasn't, and what he was packing wasn't very impressive either.

Good. The fact that one of the schools pupils has appeared in a pornograhpic video is as bad for the school's reputation as if said kid was caught smoking during school hours just outside the school.

He has first amendment rights. Also a constitutional right to go to his public school.

Oh yeah, because every time I watch porn, I'm sure to look up where the actors went to high school just for s**ts and giggles.

The only reason we even know the name of the high school is because they drew attention to themselves by doing this.

It's only bad for their reputation if he was taking a drama class and his performance of the line "Did somebody order a pizza?"lacks style and gravitas.

So what if the parents are awful parents (not neccessarily commenting on this particular case). Someone's got to step in to provide a bit of moral fibre, and, if neccessary, schools should be prepared to do that. There not just there to pour a certain quantity of facts into a child's brain. They exist to prepare that child for life and to make them a good, upright person.

I'm pretty sure we already have a system that locks up parents for not doing their jobs.

And what you just said is the primary function of schools.

There are parents who do a pretty poor job of bringing up their offspring but are not sufficiently bad (in terms of not directly abusing or physically neglecting their children) as to warrent the state locking them up for that. Take, for example, a parent who regularly swears in front of (but not at) their offspring, who instills in them no sense of basic hygiene (not telling them to wash their hands after dinner or to brush their teeth regularly), no sense of politeness (not teaching them to open doors for other people, always say please and thank you) etcetera etcetera. These, I assume, are not sufficient grounds for prosecuting the parent (and such would be difficult to enforce anyway) and yet these can do incalculable damage to the wellbeing of the child. That's why schools are sometimes needed to act as substitutes for the parents (and parents should, really, try to suplement what their child learns in school). Your comment appears to imply an, in my view, artificial division between these spheres when both a tightly linked.

Being taught the most basic of manners is hardly comparable to the topic at hand.  You are stretching this way beyond the point and you know it.

When I was in high school, plenty of people would go out to the street beside the school at lunchtime to smoke.

When I went to high school we had a student smoking area, tho you needed to either be 18 or have your parents' permission to use it.
