March 7, 2012: The Day After Super Tuesday

Fall of the House of Romney
"...I hate to lose, but I do not see the need to continue on such a fight that will only help The Democrats at the expense of a unified Republican Party. The time now has come for me to step aside, for the good of the party and for the good of the nation. Barack Obama must be denied reelection in November and with your help and your support we can put a Republican back in the White House..."

Key Results:

Ohio Primary:
Santorum: 38.0%
Romney: 36.9%
Gingrich: 14.6%
Paul: 9.2%

Two Weeks Earlier:

Michigan Primary:
Santorum: 39.0%
Romney: 38.9%
Gingrich: 16.2%
Paul: 4.4%

One Month Earlier:

Florida Primary:
Romney: 37.2%
Gingrich: 35.0%
Santorum: 19.9%
Paul: 6.1%

Checkmate!
"Today we move one step closer towards a more united party and a more united country. An end to the division of the Obama years and a time to start anew for this land that we all love."

Gingrich Bids Farewell
"I am ending my campaign and throwing my full support behind Rick Santorum to be our party's nominee and to see that he defeats Barack Obama in November."

The Romney Fall was caused by two factors. First, the candidates' inability to inspire the conservative grassroots wing of the party. His weaknesses and perception as a moderate, flip flopper allowed many "Anti-Romneys" to rise and ultimately fall during the course of the primary. Rick Santorum had the fortune of being the last "Anyone But Romney Candidate" and his rise came at the right time: The Iowa Caucuses. Second, Romney's inability to rally conservatives as a candidate who would take the fight to Barack Obama gave people like Santorum an opening. Without Iowa Santorum would be nowhere, but perhaps the greatest and most triumphant moments of the entire campaign was Santorum's narrow, but crucial win over Romney in Michigan, the state in which he was born and that his father, George Romney was a Governor.

Presidential Poll:
Barack Obama: 50%
Rick Santorum: 37%
Undecided: 13%

The Wild Card
"I think it's a terrible choice for the American people. You have really two extremes, and that's not what America's about; our country has always been about choices, about visions, about different directions. I don't see that in this campaign. I see two extremes and that's not a campaign worthy of America and her great history. So I'm conflicted. I'm conflicted at this point and I'm not ruling out any option about my political future, at least not yet."

HUNTSMAN DECLARES THIRD PARTY BID

Rumors had been circling since his departure from the race in January, over whether or not Jon Huntsman would seek the Presidency as an independent. After flirting with the idea of running on the American Elect Party, he decided that an partially self-funded independent bid was the better way to go. Huntsman, who couldn't break more than low single digits in the Republican Primary, was seen as a stark alternative to both Santorum and Obama. The idea of Huntsman getting into the race again always was in the back of his mind. He certainly felt the country was ready for a third choice as he called it, that in 2012 the time for an independent bid was right.

Almost overnight his campaign caught fire, more so than his failed GOP bid did only a few months early. Unbounded by Republican primary politics Huntsman was free and open to talk about the issues he saw facing the country and tackling the biggest of them all -- the trust deficit. His campaign slogan: Country First, fit with his message notion of being above politics. Some in the GOP dismissed him as having sour grapes, others, more moderate and establishment Republicans saw him as someone to put their clout behind.

Obama-World

The new of Huntsman's bid came as both a surprise and a revealing opportunity to Obama and team. When he entered the race as a Republican the Obama Campaign feared his candidacy the most. "He's not Mitt Romney. Pure and simple. He's someone who can speak to the regular folks and connect with them in ways the others cannot. I'm afraid if he's the nominee we're in trouble." -- Barack Obama.

Though the chance of Huntsman as an independent would certainly create headlines and he'd most certainly be participating in the debates, David Plouffe saw Huntsman doing more damage to the Republicans, than Obama. "More moderate, sensible GOPers are going to get behind this guy. He may peel off a few Dems and indies, but I think we'll be able to cut through it and pull out a win."

RICK SANTORUM: Don't Forget About Me

The Santorum Campaign struggled in both funding and polling as the summer months dragged on. Rick Santorum, frustrated with Huntsman's entrance, and seeing it as sucking the energy from his own campaign, he took the approach that brought his success throughout his entire political career and brought him to the Republican Nominee. He hit the ground, working every small town, every county, in all the important states. "This race will be won on the ground and that's where we're going to be from here until November 6th."

VP Shortlist:
Newt Gingrich (R-GA)
Marco Rubio (R-FL)
Bob McDonnell (R-VA)
Kelly Ayotte (R-NH)

Huntsman Running Strong

Jon Huntsman ran with the full swagger of a presidential campaign; crisscrossing the country and targeting Democrat and Republican states alike. A candidate polling strongly in the polls Huntsman looked to set off a political earthquake and with money coming in, along with his own self-funding Huntsman looked tough to beat. As the dog days of summer carried on Huntsman looked to focus on his selection for Vice President.

Rumored VP Shortlist:
Joe Manchin (D-VA)
Evan Bayh (D-IN)
Michael Bloomberg (I-NY)
Olympia Snowe (R-ME)
Jodi Rell (R-CT)
Lisa Murkowski (R-AK)
Lincoln Chaffee (I-RI)

Presidential Polling: July 2012
Obama: 30%
Santorum: 25%
Huntsman: 20%
Undecided: 25%

OBAMA Moving Forward

The Huntsman Spectacle, as Obama likened to it, was only temporary. He focused on holding key states from 2008 and taking some states in the possible division in the GOP. "We're going to keep doing what we're doing. We're going to keep talking, we're going to keep talking. The Republicans have no record and Huntsman won't be able to get a clear swipe at us.

IT'S GINGRICH

Two weeks before the Republican Convention Rick Santorum announced his selection of Newt Gingrich for Vice President. The pick was seen as Santorum doubling down on his conservative message and credentials for the election. The runner up was believed to be Florida Senator Marco Rubio. Gingrich brought baggage, but he also brought a fierce fighting streak that the Republican base wanted in the fight against Barack Obama.
"We are at a critical juncture. We can either keep going in the same direction which is the liberal, secular, pardon the expression but socialistic bent we've been on for four years, or we can go with a weather vane. Now the choice we offer is a clear conservative solution. An end to big government. An end to appeasement. A Return to the Reagan era economic policies. If you're for getting government shrunk, if you're for strengthening our securities, if you're for more freedom than you're voting Rick Santorum and Newt Gingrich in November." -- Newt Gingrich

Presidential Election Poll: August 2012
Obama: 30% (+/-0)
Huntsman: 24% (+2)
Santorum: 21% (-1)
Undecided: 25%

OBAMA IN THE MIDDLE
The Obama Campaign kept their focus on the important swing states, trying to remain from directly engaging with Senator Santorum or Governor Huntsman directly. "They'll be plenty of time after the conventions," Obama said, despite the continued rise of Huntsman. They didn't worry about a Huntsman victory, but they worried about an electoral deadlock. "We fail to hit 270, Santorum becomes President," Biden said during one of the strategy meetings. "That's just horrible."

COUNTRY FIRST

As the Republican Convention closed and conservatives rallied behind Santorum, Jon Huntsman revealed his choice for Vice President, selecting West Virginia Senator and Democrat, Joe Manchin. In announcing Manchin Huntsman proclaimed that this ticket was more about problem solving and less about politics. "This is more than one party over the other. This election is about the course and direction of America," Manchin said on the stump. "I am honored to run with this man who is the only one in the race willing and able to talk about the real issues. I support him, I am behind him 100 percent and I know that in the weeks ahead we will see our support grow and on November 6th elect Jon Huntsman President of the United States!"

The Republican Crisis
"Governor Huntsman is an honorable man, but let's be honest about one thing. The reason he's running is the fact he couldn't get anywhere in the Republican primary. He's an opportunist." The rise of Huntsman and the fall of Santorum brought about a crisis in Republican circles. Party elites were split, but slowly individuals came forward throwing their support behind the third party bid. While Santorum tried to keep his focus on Obama, the continued focus on Huntsman made it practically impossible. "We can't get ahead." -- Rick Santorum to Newt Gingrich.

JOIN THE HUNT

The Presidential debates, were seen by all candidates as moments for a game change. Obama saw it as the time to attack Santorum and ignore Huntsman. Santorum saw it as opportunity to reintroduce himself and regain a place in the polls. Huntsman saw it as a time to hit home his message of country first and solutions over politics. In all three debates Huntsman was largely seen as the winner, with Obama seen as drawing even in the final foreign policy debate.

Huntsman's stock immediately rose, and Obama dipped. Santorum attempted to stop the bleeding, but pundits debate whether or not he could pull it around. While his standing remained competitive in southern and traditional Republican states, in all of the battleground and Northeast he was dead in the water. The Obama Campaign saw the final weeks of the campaign as a chance to rise above the fray and hone is message over what he had done for the last four years.

Huntsman Kicks Off Last Leg of the Campaign
Huntsman spent the final campaign events in the Northeast and finishing with the pivotal battleground states of Virginia and Ohio. "I believe that we can still make this land, a place of opportunity for our people and beacon of hope for the world."

Obama Ends Campaign Where It Began
Where his presidential ambition launched, Obama closed out in Iowa with a final rally, calling for "America to keep moving forward."

Santorum's Closing Arguments
Down in the polls and financially drained, Santorum hit the ground, campaigning with a skeleton staff, hoping to use the same effort that propelled him to victory in Iowa to the White House. In the closing days his numbers improved, slightly making him competitive at least nationally.

Final Poll: November 2012
Huntsman: 34%
Obama: 33%
Santorum: 31%
Undecided: 2%

Most final polls showed Huntsman in the lead nationally and in many of the swing states, but most found it difficulty to project a third-party, former Republican candidate to win the presidency. Nate Silver saw the election as undecided, but offered one prediction, "Huntsman will win the popular vote, but the electoral vote could be deadlock."

Do you plan to take this past 2012, or is this TL just one election cycle?

Prediction: Huntsman wins the popular vote and a slim electoral plurality over Obama. Santorum comes in a distant third, but is set to be crowned by the House. To avoid what would likely be massive riots if the third-place candidate is installed by Congress, both houses agree to elect the third-party candidate who used to belong to their party rather than the chaos of a Santorum/Biden admin.

Loving this timeline!

^Hopefully Obama is reelected. Any other path Forward would surely spell demise for our great nation. Wink

I'm kinda mad Huntsman's taking more from Obama than Santorum. You'd think establishment Reps would flock to him more so than moderate Dems.
