RFK's fiscal conservatism has been something of a myth created by Third Wayites/Clintonians in order to claim that they haven't strayed from their original values.  If you read his platform, it's quite leftist.  I also have a personal identification with him, since he seems to have been, well, the "gayest" of the three by far.

RFK only became such a progressive hero when he saw an opportunity to unseat LBJ. Outside of the brief period of him campaigning for President, he was nowhere near a "progressive hero".

Post his brother's Presidency, his positions were quite left-of-center.  As well as during the last few months of his brother's administration.
