HP

They've only used it twice since the year 2000, so this isn't much of anything but bandwagon jumping for show.

Show for whom, though?  It's hard to imagine a majority of Washingtonians don't support the death penalty.

FF for this reason Smiley (Although I don't see what he gains by doing it.)

I don't think Inslee has any presidential/VP ambitions, so there's no one he's going to impress or win over with this outside his state.

I'm pretty sure a well funded referendum to abolish the death penalty would fail at the ballot I have no clue why he felt it necessary to make this decision or even wade into this at all there's nothing politically for him.

This backfired on Hickenlooper and all he did was delay an execution not stop them entirely but it still didn't stop his approval rating from taking. Inslee should let the voters decide on this issue instead of making the decision himself just not good politically.

Whether it's 'just not good politically' or otherwise, it's the right thing to do. Far better, even, if he is not motivated by any dreams of potential political gain.

He just wants to be on the "right" side of the issue, boys.  "Look at me!"

I wouldn't be surprised if someone started an initiative to have executions resumed.

I'm pretty confident this is because of how Inslee personally feels about the issue, and not for any gain he could gain from it -- WA definitely has solid majority for capital punishment, and it's not like there are groups out there willing to throw gold at elected officials for anti-capital punishment action. I hope Inslee loses narrowly in 2016, so as to discourage other Governors from taking such action.

He already has had a pretty rock first year a lot of missteps and failures and considering how narrowly he won last year I just don't understand him making bold decisions like this. I can definitely see McKenna wanting a rematch in 2016.

And what's about Kitzhaber? Did his approvals take a hit after he declared a moratorium in Oregon?

I'm not entirely sure that's true, but even if it is it's beside the point. As long as politicians think it is, they'll act accordingly.

Except when they do...like 1988.

Humans shouldn't play at being God. God only should decide when he is calling back people to the other world.
