How long until an openly gay or lesbian candidate is viable for President?

How long do you think it will be before an openly gay or lesbian or bisexual politician will be a truly plausible/strong candidate for the Presidency? To be more specific, how long do you think it will be before a gay, lesbian or bisexual dirge will for example be nominated by his or her party for President?

America usually elects a candidate of a certain cred about 20 years after we as a country were ready for it.  We were ready for a black president in 1988, but got one in 2008.  I would expect one to be elected in the 2040's or 50's

America is ready for a gay candidate, but I can't think of a single gay politician competent enough to be President besides Tammy Baldwin, and I don't see her running.

It's a silly question.  If you pick any trait that describes a small percentage of the population, it's unlikely to show up in a President in any short period of time.  We're ready for a President who is male, with green eyes, six foot two inches tall, left-handed and born in Omaha, Nebraska.  It is almost impossible to that we will elect such a person, but not because we are not ready for it. 

It's all about the person.  If the right sort of candidate showed up, I think we could elect a gay or lesbian President at the next opportunity.  Actually, a lesbian President might be more palatable.  But, I think it would be only a small disadvantage in 20-30 years or so.

Also, as has been pointed out, we've almost certainly already had a closeted gay President.

I think an openly gay candidate could win probably in 10-15 years, but it would have to be a few well-structured campaign, focused on electoral votes and not worrying at all about winning the popular vote.

Some poll read that 77% of the population would vote for a black president in the 70's. I'd say we were ready before 1988.
