This is a rank of US states + D.C. relative liberalness as compared to the ethnic mix-up of each state. To make it simple I've used only the ranking between states on both accounts as a comparison tool, that is the rank of Democratic advantage in the 2012 presidential election and the rank of the percentage of the 2010 non-Hispanic white population in each state. That gives us this rank of relative liberalness:

1. Vermont: +47 (3rd most Democratic, 50th most diverse)

2. Maine: +38 (13th most Democratic, 51st most diverse [least diverse])

3. New Hampshire: +26 (22nd most Democratic, 48th most diverse)
4. Iowa: +25 (21st most Democratic, 46th most diverse)
5. Rhode Island: +24 (5th most Democratic, 29th most diverse)

6. Massachusetts: +21 (7th most Democratic, 28th most diverse)
7. Minnesota: +21 (18th most Democratic, 39th most diverse)
8. Wisconsin: +21 (19th most Democratic, 40th most diverse)

9. Oregon: +17 (15th most Democratic, 32nd most diverse)

10. Connecticut: +13 (11th most Democratic, 24th most diverse)
11. Michigan: +13 (17th most Democratic, 30th most diverse)
12. Washington: +11 (14th most Democratic, 25th most diverse)
13. Delaware: +10 (9th most Democratic, 19th most diverse)
14. Pennsylvania: +10 (23rd most Democratic, 33rd most diverse)
15. Ohio: +10 (26th most Democratic, 36th most diverse)
16. Montana: +10 (35th most Democratic, 45th most diverse)
17. New York: +8 (4th most Democratic, 12th most diverse)
18. North Dakota: +7 (40th most Democratic, 47th most diverse)

19. Indiana: +5 (32nd most Democratic, 37th most diverse)
20. Missouri: +4 (31st most Democratic, 35th most diverse)
21. New Jersey: +3 (10th most Democratic, 13th most diverse)
22. Illinois: +3 (12th most Democratic, 15th most diverse)
23. South Dakota: +3 (39th most Democratic, 42nd most diverse)
24. West Virginia: +2 (47th most Democratic, 49th most diverse)
25. Washington D.C.: +1 (Most Democratic, 2nd most diverse)
26. Maryland: +1 (6th most Democratic, 7th most diverse)

27. Hawaii: -1 (2nd most Democratic, most diverse)
28. Colorado: -1 (24th most Democratic, 23rd most diverse)
29. Kentucky: -1 (45th most Democratic, 44th most diverse)

30. California: -5 (8th most Democratic, 3rd most diverse)
31. Nebraska: -5 (43rd most Democratic, 38th most diverse)
32. Virginia: -7 (25th most Democratic, 18th most diverse)
33. Idaho: -7 (48th most Democratic, 41st most diverse)
34. Wyoming: -7 (50th most Democratic, 43rd most diverse)
35. North Carolina: -8 (28th most Democratic, 20th most diverse)

36. Kansas: -11 (42nd most Democratic, 31st most diverse)
37. New Mexico: -12 (16th most Democratic, 4th most diverse)
38. Nevada: -14 (20th most Democratic, 6th most diverse)
39. Tennessee: -14 (41st most Democratic, 27th most diverse)

40. South Carolina: -16 (33rd most Democratic, 17th most diverse)
41. Florida: -17 (27th most Democratic, 10th most diverse)
42. Utah: -17 (51st most Democratic, 34th most diverse)

43. Alaska: -20 (36th most Democratic, 16th most diverse)
44. Arkansas: -20 (46th most Democratic, 26th most diverse)
45. Georgia: -21 (29th most Democratic, 8th most diverse)
46. Arizona: -21 (30th most Democratic, 9th most diverse)
47. Mississippi: -23 (34th most Democratic, 11th most diverse)
48. Alabama: -23 (44th most Democratic, 21st most diverse)
49. Louisiana: -24 (38th most Democratic, 14th most diverse)

50. Oklahoma: -27 (49th most Democratic, 22nd most diverse)

51. Texas: -32 (37th most Democratic, 5th most diverse)

That rank gives us this map:

What a north-south divide! In other words, the real divide in the country isn't between red and blue states, but between the north and the south lol. Tongue

Though to be more specific, what the map really shows us are mainly two facts:

1) Most liberal whites live in the north (and east) and most conservative whites live in the south (and west).
2) The vast majority of minorities live in the south (and west).

Also notice how BOTH New Hampshire and Iowa are in the top 4 rank! Which means that both of the two first in the nation (caucus/primary) states are both almost free from minorities AND have many more liberal whites than the national average.

What's interesting is that everyone is always bashing West Virginia for being so racist and Virginia for being so enlightened (including myself at times), but WV actually has more whites voting Dem than VA does.
