What if the Democratic party completely dissolved after several subsequent presidential and midterm shellackings, and at the exact same time the rift within the GOP grew so big that the establishment and the Tea Party split and the TP became  an actual political party. What would happen? Would the Libertarians rise up? Would the GOP win formerly Dem states, and the Tea Party win once GOP states? What are you ideas?

What do you mean by dissolve? Split into factions or just somehow disappear? I think you'd see a mass exodus of progressives to the Green Party, with more conservative/blue dog Dems jumping ship for the establishment GOP. The middle 60% of the party would probably form another party.

My best guess is that what is left of the major parties would reform into 3 new political parties. I feel that the very liberal Democrats would merge with the Green Party and several minor third parties in order to create the Progressive Party. Some of the main members of the Progressive Party would probably be Bernie Sanders, Howie Hawkins, Martin O'Malley and Zephyr Teachout.

The more moderate Republicans and Democrats would likely merge together to form the Whig Party. The Whig Party would likely have a diverse array of members ranging from centrist Democrats such as Andrew Cuomo, Hillary Clinton, Jim Webb and Joe Manchin as well as some of the more moderate Republicans such as Lindsey Graham, Jon Huntsman, Jeb Bush, Chris Christie, Bill Haslam, John McCain, Thad Cochran and Lamar Alexander.

The very Conservative Republicans, Tea Party members and those who are active in the Christian Right movement would likely merge together to form the Conservative Party. Some of the key members of the Conservative Party would be Ted Cruz, Mike Huckabee, Roy Moore, Michele Bachmann, Sarah Palin, Rick Santorum, Sam Brownback, Steve King, Jeff Sessions, Jim Inhofe and Ben Carson.

I suspect there is a largely leftist party rises, the GOP slowly moves to the center, while the Tea Party very much remains where it is.
