How how about Mississippi's original flag, the one they adopted in 1861 and replaced in 1894 with the current design?

If it truly is all about heritage and not about stubbornly keeping a symbol racists embrace, the Magnolia Flag would seem to be a perfect flag for Mississippi.

That's actually a quite nice state flag, and I hadn't seen it before. What did they have before 1861?

My God, that looks horrible. Though perhaps that Magnolia tree can be incorporated somehow in whatever design Mississippi picks.

The fact that people think Georgia's current state flag is less offensive than their last only shows how desperately awful our education is in the U.S. in regards to history. They replaced a flag that had the ANV battle flag and replaced it with the original stars and bars national flag of the CSA.

The offense from the pre-2001 flag comes mainly because of the racists who have wrapped themselves in the Southron Cross.

What it means is that symbols have the meaning that we assign to them.

Most of them are artificial territorial constructions with no historical basis. It's not surprising that their symbols would suck.

Nike, as a corporation, is also an artificial construction with no historical basis. But its logo is one of the most iconic in history. If companies can design meaningful, memorable logos, I don't see why states can't do so with flags.

That brings up an interesting suggestion: I would strongly support each state hiring Chermayeff & Geismar & Haviv to redesign their flag.
