The first primaries are the most important. If a campaign is on life support, and they don't win, they'll likely be pressured out. Fundraisers would rather go with the options that have more "momentum." Voters would rather vote for those who are winners. And of course, the Republican nominee will need the support of enough of the conservative grassroots base.

So, who of the above could win at least two of the first three primaries (in Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina)?

I see Pence winning IA and SC; same with Walker, Cruz, Huckabee, and maybe Jindal, Bush, Carson.
I could see Bush, Paul, and maybe Walker winning NH and SC.

South Carolina will most likely be the fourth contest, following Iowa, New Hampshire, and Nevada.

Rand Paul could theoretically win IA, NH, SC, and NV. He has different appeals in all of them. Huckabee and Cruz could win IA and SC. Bush could win NH and SC.

Key word is could.

The following could win Iowa and New Hampshire.

Ted Cruz- In a crowded field, he could pander to the base enough to win both early primary states.

Rand Paul- Dad's network did pretty well in 2012. In a crowded field, the same numbers could get him first place.

Chris Christie- An impressive political talent built for debates and clips of town halls.

Mitt Romney- Has done well in the states in the past.

Jeb Bush- Has tremendous resources. Starts out as a toptier candidate, so good performances would prevent potential establishment rivals from shining.

Scott Walker/ Marco Rubio/ Paul Ryan/ Rob Portman/ John Kasich- There is the possibility that the Republican primary will be decided by around this time next week, when one of several generic politicians does a little bit better than the others, which gets positive publicity, which gets more support, with a bandwagon effect combined with a feedback loop. These are the guys who can do it.

Condoleeza Rice- She stands out in a crowded field.

The following could win Iowa and South Carolina.

Rick Perry- Assuming he runs a perfect campaign, which is quite unlikely.

Mike Huckabee- Won Iowa before. Came close in SC.

Isn't that almost all the major GOP candidates? I'm not sure you factored in for the specifics of the states. I don't see Cruz winning in New Hampshire (though IA & SC is totally feasible), or Christie or Romney winning in Iowa. I know you said the key word is "could" but that leaves yourself a little too much slack.

Kelly Ayotte barely won her Senate primary against Ovide Lamontagne. There are some hardcore conservatives in New Hampshire.

It's a potentially crowded field and we don't yet know if certain top-tier candidates will run, so there are going to be several potential winners for each state. Anyone with a shot at getting 22 percent of the primary vote in a state can end up winning that state.
