I wasn't sure where to put this question so I'm putting it here (feel free to move if you think it belongs somewhere else).

My question is if California, Oregon, Washington and Hawaii formed a new nation,

i) What do you think the name of this nation should be?

ii) Where should its capital be?

iii) What would be the major political parties and who would be its first president?

SF would be the default capital, I think.

Interesting!  What about questions (i) and (iii)?  Any ideas? Smiley

Why on earth would Washington and Oregon want to be yoked to (and vastly outvoted by) California and its dysfunctionality?

It's a hypothetical scenario.

Right, but if you're realistically trying to extrapolate what would happen politically in such a scenario, then you are inevitably led to the conclusion that Washington and Oregon would immediately secede.

With regards to politics, I'd doubt it'd change too much. The Republicans (or their nearest equivalent) would moderate instantly, to suck up some suburban voters. There'd be no other significant changes.

Meh.

Neoclassical architecture with a massive dome is so 19th century.

i) What do you think the name of this nation should be?

Paciffic

ii) Where should its capital be?

San Francisco, CA

iii) What would be the major political parties and who would be its first president?

I think you'd have a Liberal Party, which would be left-wing, and take up much of the coast. You'd have a Conservative Party, which would be moderate, and popular in San Diego and elsewhere in SoCal, as well as among current coastal and suburban Republicans. Then you'd have a Tea Party, which would be right-wing and popular in "Jefferson," most of the Central Valley and rural Washington. The Tea Party would probably be secessionist.

The first President Barbara Boxer of the Liberal Party.

Give them Nevada as well.

That would certainly help California secure its share of Colorado River water. Imagine if Lake Mead and Hoover Dam were binational?

i) What do you think the name of this nation should be?

I know Cascadia only applies to Oregon and Washington but I think it could work.

ii) Where should its capital be?

I would have to agree with San Francisco. Maybe split it off from CA and make it its own district like DC, but it would probably stay part of CA.

iii) What would be the major political parties and who would be its first president?

Probably still Republicans and Democrats, but if those states actually seceded then there would probably have been new parties formed before secession.

I could see one of two things happening with the parties:
Either the Republicans moderate heavily and become competitive, or they eventually collapse and the Democratic Party splits (or a new party forms) after a period of dominance. The former is more likely though.

Re: The political parties

It really depends on what system you choose. If they adopted the American system, they'd get the same Dem vs. GOP dynamic we have now, only shifted to the left.

i) West Siyeeeed, but Pacifica might be preferable

ii) Eugene, OR

iii) Major political parties would still be Republicans and Democrats, but the Republican Party of Pacifica would moderate on social matters and become more inventive. Nevada would almost certainly go with them, and Las Vegas would be a welcome economic area. If Nevada goes, the pro-firearm faction might retain some power.

I wouldn't mind if it happened because it would be open season on Northeastern liberals in the United States. Nothing is worse than status quo liberals. At least the left-coast are true progressives.
