These concepts have no meaning outside of a political context.

Blue state no doubt.

Since when do red states have more nature? I get that blue states have more cities, but cities aren't that big area-wise. Every blue state minus a few has rural area.

And on top of that, the blue state rural areas are the types of nature that I am looking for to spend a weekend in. I would much rather spend time in rural Minnesota, New York, or Vermont, than in rural Mississippi, Texas, or Oklahoma.

Ideally I want an urban living situation surrounded by great nature-filled places to visit. Chicago is ideal for that, as is New York, Twin Cities, Milwaukee, Boston, Denver, etc.

So blue state for me.

Red state because they tend to have low costs of living and my fiance wants 5+ kids.

Shocked

That ole-time religion for ya. Wink

Anywho, I agree with Franzl. There really isn't anything else that collectively defines "red" states  as opposed to  "blue" states other than their respective voting patterns-which is a tautology, of course.

Every blue state minus a few has rural area.

Actually, every blue state period.  Even New Jersey (hello Pine Barrens).

As for me, my most important consideration for where to live is that I feel a need to live as car-free a life as possible, which restricts my choices considerably.  I'm much more interested in the neighborhood, city, or metro area than the state level.  Practically all the places in the US that I'd be happy in happen to be in blue states- but that isn't because of their voting patterns or anything (for whatever limited relationship exists, the arrow of causality almost certainly runs in the opposite direction).

I'm not interested in living outside an urban area, and I can't think of any urban area in a Republican state that particularly appeals to me.

I couldn't bear to live outside a city, so blue state obvs.

Cities?  We have those things in red states, too.  Louisville is quite nice.

The only thing a red state would offer me are more churches, since I'm pretty religious.

Otherwise, I think the benefits of a blue state outweigh the cons of it and the benefits of a red state.

I've also recently discovered this winter that I can't handle temperatures under 40 degrees, so I'd prefer the state to be in the South.

Wow, Floridians are so brave in the face of a bitterly cold winter.

Obviously Georgians proved ourselves this year too....

An excellent photo essay extolling reasons for living in a red state, HockeyDude.  However, believe it or not, red states do have cities and blue states do have rural areas.

I'm aware of this.  But if one is going to do this exercise, one must be compelled to speak in generalities.  If we are going to talk blue and red, then we should be talking REALLY blue and red, and ignore swing states that are hard to define.

Now, please tell me.  Where are you more likely to find trailer parks vs. huge cities?  Upscale college towns vs. desolate intersections?  Boring cookie-cutter exurbs vs. coastal metropolises?
If you nitpick you can't even answer the question.

Or Texas (although I can tell the second-to-last one is in fact Princeton).

Why not Oklahoma? You could walk with Bushie and his pastor, drink 1% milk and support your great friend for his diet hahaha.

Equivalent pictures for all those shots could be found in IL. Except for the desolate intersection, shots like those can be found in Chicagoland, and there's plenty of those intersections as one drives south in IL.
