Americans have soured on their government committing mass murder overseas to line the pockets of the global elite. For an elite like Mr. Kerry, this fact is a frightening one.

John Kerry: Why are Americans so upset over the idea of perpetual war?

Yes, we are acting like a poor country, but it's not sad for the reason Kerry says.

The U.S. is also acting like a poor country when it comes to debt accumulation, clientelism in government, pay-as-you-go health care, capital punishment, bearing lots of children, and having a religious population.

What is happening to the American left?

Yes, the isolationist/"pro-authoritarian dictator because it's none of our business" thing the American left's been on lately is pretty gross.

I don't necessarily see this as him complaining about Americans lack of enthusiasm about foreign affairs, as much as him saying the truth that America is realizing that wars cost money it doesn't have.

I would dispute the idea that the "American left" is isolationist; I'd say it's more cautious than anything else. Only the far-left fringe opposes fighting Gaddafi and such.

Considering that he called limited congressional enthusiasm for a war in Syria "new isolationism," I'd say that he's not just pointing out a lack of enthusiasm for war, he's clearly criticizing that lack of enthusiasm.

Fair enough. Iraq left a bad taste in everyone's mouth. At least as far as the left is concerned.

True. But the House of Representatives comment is throwing me off. The right has hardly been embracing Hagel's planned reduction in force (Something that doesn't seem to be coming from pressure from outside-the-executive forces), and I'm unaware of the House GOP changing their position of "Cut everything EXCEPT the military" that they've had for decades.

Legions of freeloaders on the dole siphoning the scarce resources of the treasury will do that.

Please stop. Please.

I agree, krazen. The freeloading wealthy have been allowed too many tax breaks and benefits, and are breaking the treasury. They need to pay their fair share.

I'm not Ron Paul; I support intervention in certain cases. That doesn't mean that we ought to start war mongering like Kerry is doing. Caution when going to war can prevent unnecessary escalation, and liberals like yourself surely support protecting against unnecessary escalation, no?

We've mismanaged our hard and soft power me thinks.  Regarding hard power at least, somewhere along the line we need to find the proper balance between flexing our muscle and non-intervention.  It is all well and good to say, close the foreign bases, bring the troops home, keep our nose out of everyone's business, but you better have a pretty good idea on how to balance those proposed decreases in hard power with increases in soft power (more mcdonalds! Walmarts and the like...ok, I kid on those two establishments, but you get the idea).

At this point China is likely more worried about upsetting Wal-Mart than it is about upsetting our State Department.

Hmm, is Walmart our Shadow State Department then?

Senator Kerry voted for the Iraq war. Secretary of State Kerry wanted us to to militarily take the side of Al Qaeda in Syria.

Obviously both were a bad idea. People don't want to be the last man to die for a mistake. And if there is a justifiable war in the future, people aren't going to trust our leaders who want war.
