I don't really have a problem with shua's proposal but I don't think there's a need or benefit to find safer fracking technology. When I think of "safer fracking", I think of someone getting off the Titanic and into a lifeboat that has a hole in it. Instead of plugging the hole, scooping water out as more comes in.

It reminds me of "clean coal."

These things are of course always going to be relative. Any energy source is going to be either more or less ecologically sustainable and healthy depending on materials and process.  It's good to have an understanding of best practices on any technology in case it is needed, to have the best selection of options available to us. If nothing else, even if Atlasia isn't going to be doing any more fracking, other countries are going to, and they can benefit from this research.

Not to mention that both solar, wind and hydroelectric have their own aggresions to the environment.

Yes, although they are far less damaging that hydraulic fracturing.

So where do we want to go with this? A strict ban on future projects and a gradual winding down of existing ones?

Or does someone want to put shua's idea to paper?

I'm looking into that, though it's somewhat difficult given my sore lack of any relevant technical knowledge. Muon's posts in this thread look they might be helpful.

Ok, thanks. I just wanted to make sure we make the proper changes before we pass this. I don't want to redraft too many bills. Tongue

If shua were to offer his idea as an amendment, I would be inclined to support it.

Indeed, it seems the most reasonable choice in regards to this bill. I wish to see a fracking ban, but I would support that amendment as a good compromise, although it might be a good idea to propose a time limit for existing projects (a couple of years, for example) so we can finally end them at some point.

If the Senate is willing to wait another day or two I will see if I can put something together.

From what I'm reading, a fracking well can lose most of its production value 5 years or so, which means we still need to keep in mind the need for new jobs for these communities if we go with a moratorium on new ones rather than a complete ban, though it least it will be over the course of a few years rather than immediate.

Thanks Nix.   I based it off of the Illinois law along with some reading from Pro Publica.

With that, I would like to put it forward as an amendment.
