Nah; as conservative as West Virginia is federally, they are too Democratic on the stat level. It's one of the only states where the Dems have a trifecta in state government.

Probably Mississippi?

How would Romney's 17th best state be Santorum's 1st?

Probably Alabama.

I wouldn't try to get too smart with this one. We're talking about Rick Santorum here.

Santorum would probably clear 65-70% in Alabama, Oklahoma, West Virginia and Arkansas in addition to Idaho, Utah and Wyoming, as he seems to be the type of Republican who can appeal to evangelical voters in those 4 states.

Oklahoma or Alabama. AR and WV are in the running if Hillary's out.

He's very religious (and loves to campaign on this issues), so probably something like Alabama, Oklahoma or South Carolina. Even Tennessee could be a strong possibility. West Virginia however is not particularily religious.

According to SurveyUSA, West Virginia was the 7th most pro-life state in 2005 and 52% of voters in the  state identified as evangelical Christians in CNN exit polls from 2008. While granted some of that data is several years old, it should still be relatively accurate today.

Would evangelicals really get THAT fired up about a Catholic candidate?

I think that his extreme positions on social issues would make up for anti-catholic predjudice in the South.

If the Democrat is in any way associated with the Obama administration, they'll go bonkers for Santorum in Louisiana.

Definitely Oklahoma. It was McCain's best state and I imagine it will be receptive to a socon like Santorum. States like Alabama, Mississippi and South Carolina are probably too inelastic to swing that hard to him. West Virginia is another possibility but I don't think he'd do as well there as he would in Oklahoma.

WV would only be his best state if the Dem was another Obama. I think OK is the obvious answer.

Easy there.
