Common Core is awful, so I'd say they're in the right on being opposed to it.

This isn't a fundie vs. progressive issue. I'm against Common Core too. I've never heard of anyone being in favor of it except people who value tests over education. This is just NCLB part 2.

It's a top-down government dictate. They're generally opposed to it.

I'm generally in favor of common core, because I appreciate the goals, but there is stuff that I don't like about it. There were some criticisms about the vocabulary they expected second-graders to master, and it then turned out that the advisory board didn't include anyone who had taught first-to-third graders.

I'm not a fan, and I'm a progressive. Though admittedly I don't like it because it's No Child Left Behind Part 2: Electric Boogaloo at this point.

I especially like the English requirements, and that students will be reading more non-fiction. Time to get some People's History of the United States up in these schools.

Federal government mandates inevitably incite a motley coalition of parents concerned about "sovereignty"/"local control"/whether or not their children will still be able to learn about Baby 'Murican Jesus romping with dinosaurs, and teachers whose reasons range from lack of curriculum flexibility to general apathy.

A progressive teacher here. None of us like common core. In addition to it being a system designed to fail, it's also lining the pockets of Silicon Valley CEOs.

Really everyone hates common core.  Every one I know from the Bernie Sanders at my school to the Rick Santorum's

We at Brighton High School are proud to have booed NYS Education Commissioner John King off the sage when he tried to defend that heap of trash.

I thought you liked them reading more non-fiction. Wink

Partially because those obsessed really have little idea of what Common Core actually is, beyond "a spooky big government monster."

Fundies hate all education, so of course they'd hate standardized education. Their ideal world is all children getting home schooled by people who don't even know basic math and grammar. And bible study taking up 90% of the "school day".

Funny. I was homeschooled all my life and dedicated to my studies, learned to teach myself, and am now in college with a 4.0GPA. Most homeschoolers are not like what you say, yes we make take classes studying the Bible, but we get all, if not more education than those at public and private schools.
