Well since this board is the right place for politics and religion experts I thought I'd ask haha

I think it's pretty clear Pilate was a moderate hero overall.  He wouldn't even take a stance on the death penalty!  He let the crowd decide whether to kill Jesus!  So maybe not a social conservative, but a moderate hero in that case.  He's also a flip-flopper since he obviously had to change his mind after he saw how well that went! Tongue

At the same time however he also worked well with limited government, as the king of Rome (whatever he was) he couldn't do much without help from his friends.  He never tried to do anything bad unless his friends were ok with it.  So, moderate overall.

So yeah, that's my historical analysis on Pontius Pilate.  If Pilate ran against Jesus in an election today I think Jesus would win.

My map:

Jesus Christ/Barack Obama (Democrats) - 314 electoral votes (chose Obama as his VP because I think he's like Jesus in a way since they both support the poor!!)
Pontius Pilate/Mitt Romney (Republicans) - 224 electoral votes (Romney's there because he practices a false faith haha Tongue)

To get the extra pay of a chaplain, a few people in the army claim to be satanist. How would that affect the military vote?

A Republican representing a heavily Jewish area? Dead men will walk before that happens.

Pilate wasn't "King of Rome". As I recall, he was Prefect of Iudea. In any case, whatever. I might think of a map or Pilate's ideology later.

OMG yeah. King of Rome, seriously? No offense Scott, but are Americans really that ignorant about Roman history?

I'm positive Scott is joking. Even your average man on the street would probably know that Ancient Rome had emperors, not kings (although most wouldn't know that were in fact kings at one time, before the Republic).

IIRC the gospel's portrayal of Pilate is very kind, possibly to try and win Roman converts after the fall of Jerusalem (It no longer made sense to appeal only to jews). Even most Romans thought he was bloodthirsty and excessively cruel.

I was told Judah was ruled by a grand Pubah once before. Although I think most Americans know that rome was ruled by emperors.

I thought it was pretty obvious, but yes, this thread is a satire of some comments I've read on and off this board.

Unfortunately, some people will take modest proposals seriously, especially on the internet.

It seemed kind of like it was joking, but I couldn't not pass up a chance to criticize something. I mean, really, what would you do if you saw this thread?

The GOP ain't my glass of scotch or anything.  But since they haven't yet literally begun nailing civilian protestors up on stakes of wood regularly, I guess Pilate would think the GOP is too compassionate.

Conversely, it could be argued that Jesus was nailed for speaking out against the idea that everything belongs to Caesar and thus the Pilate would be a Democrat who supports a strong government.

So Pilate's a law-and-order Democrat, sort of a first century Henry M. Jackson?

No.  Not what I'm saying at all.  I'm saying Pilate was a monster who didn't mind slaughtering Jewish resisters in the province he was governing in broad daylight.  That's why he is not comparable to modern American Republicans.  That was my point.  K?

Woulrd Brian step into this contest? And who would be his running mate? And it's clear that Pilate's running mate would be his old good friend Biggus Dickus.
