Are we talking about physically taking water out of a well or having a well (in say, a private garden) as a water source which is then attached to the plumbing system into your sink? Because I have used the latter.

When I'm at home as opposed to being on campus, this.

Well water for both private and municipal systems is normal around here in northern IL. Once one is outside of the Lake Michigan basin which has strict water regulations, shallow and deep aquifers are the most reliable source of water. Municipal systems tap into both shallow and deep bedrock aquifers, while private wells that serve single homes use more shallow groundwater.

Yes my grandparents had well water but it was connected to the house plumbing. I did not like the taste.

Yeah, there's no pop in a well.

That's how we get our water, yes. There's a difference between a well that you directly take water out of and merely a public water source stored underground.

Grew up drinking tank water (water off the roof, as opposed to from underground) and like Bushy, I preferred the taste to tap water. Bore water (which I think is the same thing as your well water) is often used for agricultural purposes, including watering golf courses.

My parents have well water in their home in New Jersey. It's easily the best tasting water I've ever had.

I lived on well water for 11 years, from the time I was born until 1999.

And like I posted in Update, the kind of well you have to spend a couple thousand dollars on to have someone drill 300 feet down (and pray they find water):

That was my reaction. When did Atlas become supermajority rural?

There are lots suburban homes on small private wells in my area. In the NE my in-laws use water from their private well in suburban Boston. For municipal systems wells are also a common source in many parts of the US. A great deal of bottled water is actually well water when it doesn't explicitly say spring water.

The house that I grew up in was on well water when I was a kid, in the 80s.  And it was hardly rural.  A suburb of ~30,000 people.
