In many ways, Lincoln was the Nixon of his time. Elected as a minority president with a nation being torn asunder, he would work hard to incorporate both inter- and intra- party rivals into a broad coalition for re-election. As well, he would be known as a hawk in comparison to his re-election opponent. Neither finished out their second term due to their geese coming home to hatch, so to speak.
