If Mississippi and Oklahoma won't drink the Tea Party kool-aid, who will?

Aside from the outlier of Cantor's defeat (which may very well have been due to other factors), the Tea Party has just been handed defeat after defeat in these primaries.

Based on my perspective, it absolutely was. So to me, it's an outlier for sure.

So will Mississippi introduce party registration that can't be changed during a runoff period so as to keep Democrats from messing with future Republican primaries?  That seems like an obvious revenge move for the Tea Partiers to push for.

Considering most MS GOP legislators, and certainly their leadership, backed Cochran, I seriously doubt it.

Do you really think that if the Mississippi Tea Party makes this a litmus test, the establishment Republicans would dare oppose it?  For that matter some Democrats might support it, in hopes of moving the Mississippi GOP to the right so that they could reoccupy the center.

Maybe in a couple years, but there's no way the Establishment members of the legislature are going to get rid of the loophole that saved Thad's ass.

Thanks Cinyc. Could be re: the Ghanans, though the heart of "Little Ghana" is about 30 blocks south. One of the precincts appears to include Clinton DeWitt High School which is Rangel's alma mater, fwiw (though he dropped out his junior year). The school website actually lists a majority of students as being of Hispanic origin, and only a bit over one-third as black.

DeWitt Clinton. I know this since my father is also an alum.

Amazing how Rangel always pulls through.

Lots of people believe in demons.  This guy is an absolute nut though.

What portion of Colo Springs is that - the article says that the previous incumbent was a Republican, but did they just send a demon-possessed person to the State House, or did they just deliver the seat to the Dems?

District 15 in the house covers the eastern suburban part of the Colorado Springs area. I actually drew it out the best I could, and from my drawings it voted 63-36 McCain in 2008.

Meanwhile in OK-3, Frank Lucas' primary victory is being contested by one of his losing opponents:

5% of the Republican primary electorate voted for this nut.

It gets worse. Timothy Ray Murray was the Democratic general election candidate in this district in 2012, when he got 20%.

The next interesting primary is in 3 weeks on July 22, with the GA Senate runoff.

(On July 15, there are runoffs in AL and NC, but nothing really interesting).

(On July 15, there are runoffs in AL and NC, but nothing really interesting).
Well, for AL and NC, we will find out which Republicans replace Spencer Bachus and the gorgeous Howard Coble, respectively.

AL-6 is either going to end up with an NRA, NRL and Tea Party-backed Paul DeMarco who garnered 33% or the Santorum-backed constitutional conservative Gary Palmer who garnered 20%. Presumably DeMarco though since he has the most money on hand and is seen as the true-blood conservative after that sharp ad he ran against Palmer attacking his support for Gov. Riley's tax increase.

There's also a lesser scale race to determine AL's next Secretary of State in yet another old vs. new generation runoff between John Merrill and Reese McKinney; Merrill edged McKinney out initially 40-38. It's worth mentioning to that the next Alabama Auditor will either be a geezer who wants you to know his name is Jim Zeigler or a llama breeding, "thugs and criminals" cowboy. Zeigler got 47% to the cowboy's 24% in the primary. Alabama's candidates never fail to amaze me. Tongue

North Carolina's runoff match-ups aren't as interesting, but there are two House seats (only one of them really matters though). NC-6 to replace Coble will either be Tea Party-backed and leader of the NC Senate Phil Berger x6 or religious sociocon Mark Walker. Berger got 34% to Walker's 25% originally. I'd say his chances are good, but his bud in the other house, Tillis, might not be so lucky. In neighboring NC-5, there's a Democratic runoff between an anti-Citizens United activist Josh Brannon and resident Gardenia Henley. It was 33-26 Brannon with Brannon who apparently did well in Ashe and Watauga, but Henley did the best in Forsyth. Whoever wins the primary though will ultimately lose to Virginia Foxx in the general.

I voted in a special election primary today for county coroner.  The former occupant of the office was inconsiderate enough to last just long enough before dying that the primary (and the runoff in two weeks, which was pretty much inevitable given there were seven candidates) could not be scheduled to be held at the same time as the regular primaries.  It remains to be seen if we'll have to do this all over again for county sheriff as out long term (41 years in office) sheriff has been indicted and suspended from office for allegedly taking bribes from the owner of a local chain of Mexican restaurants to let some of his employees go when they were arrested and found to be illegally in this country.  We have an interim sheriff appointed by Haley (as called for when a sheriff has been arrested and hauled to jail for a felony) and he's already fired four of Metts' chief deputies and appointed replacements.  (May I say there has been little love lost between Haley and Metts.)  It certainly was ironic to see Metts do a perp walk from the law enforcement center that the county council named after him a few years ago. Oops!

He's actually Phil Berger Jr., the son of the Senate leader.

Alabama will be the state to keep the closest eye on on the 15th, it has way more runoffs than NC. Here's the full list:

Alabama:
- Cotton Promotion Referendum (only item that isn't a runoff) (The Alabama Cotton Producer Assessment Refund Amendment, Amendment 1 is on the July 15, 2014 primary runoff ballot in Alabama as a legislatively-referred constitutional amendment. The measure, upon voter approval, would end the assessment refund to cotton producers who do not participate in the assessment program for the cotton checkoff, as well as enable a second act: Senate Bill 256. The measure was primarily sponsored by Sen. Billy Beasley (D-28) in the Alabama State Senate, where it was known as Senate Bill 255. It is also known as Proposed Statewide Amendment Number One. (BallotPedia))

- GOP Auditor
- GOP Public Service Commissioner
- GOP Sec. of State
- GOP State House 12
- GOP State House 43
- GOP State House 72
- GOP State Senate 1
- GOP State Senate 22
- GOP State Senate 30
- GOP U.S. House 6

(Hmmm, not a single democratic runoff. This is when you know you're in a really republican state. A lot of these are tatamount to election, meaning a lot of these you only have to watch on the 15th, in november they will be quick calls. I'm particularly interested in the house race and the referendum.)

North Carolina's list looks pale in comparison:

- DEM State House 23
- DEM U.S. House 5
- GOP U.S. House 6

The House races will capture most of the attention, one of which doesn't matter as the district is safe R in November (District 5), and one of which that is tatamount to election (District 6).

For the record, GA's list of runoffs on the 22nd is slightly larger than Alabama's.

July's a pretty calm month in terms of elections. But don't worry, in August and Early September there are more primaries than you could ever want, plus runoffs in South Dakota and Oklahoma.
