More acts of desperation than stupidity.

That's how it goes -- a dying cause becomes more extreme, strident, and hostile as what passes for moderates leave. Think of segregationism:  the Klan got increasingly prominent in the dying cause.

Everything the GOP has done since the 90s or so is an act of stupidity.

Politically, it's beyond stupid.  Just as the country warms to gay rights in such an overwhelming wave that it's almost beyond belief... the GOP goes on a freakin' tirade with proposals looking to actively discriminate against them in a public setting.  Even in the 1980s they tended to just try to maintain "traditional values" without actually writing discriminatory legislation.  They have a chance to capitalize on a relatively unpopular Democratic administration, and they go ahead and make themselves look like a bunch of loons all over again.  As a Democrat, this is wonderful news, but as a person with a bit of knowledge and background in political strategy (at least educationally), I can't help but comment on how terrible it is when it comes to strategy.

In the Michigan Supreme Court, the anti-SSM case has gone to the question of whether SSM is bad for children.
