Kris Kobach is the Kansas Republican Secretary of State, and an anti-illegal immigration activist. He is one of the experts in the the anti-immigration Arizona law SB 1070. He is very conservative, and if the Republicans can't find a conservative alternative to a Jeb Bush, Scott Walker, or a Marco Rubio, could he be the dark horse guy?

Smart guy, he'd be a good cabinet member.

Ted Cruz is the only major candidate who can definitively distance himself from immigration reform, so if he doesn't run it could open up room for an anti-amnesty dark horse.

He wouldn't be a strong presidential nominee because he comes from a small state and doesn't hold the requisite statewide office (Senator or Governor.)

He wouldn't be a strong vice-presidential nominee, because he doesn't have much appeal to Independents or soft Democrats.

And he's unlikely to launch a longshot run because he's seen as a serious guy. A meaningless bid for Prez undercuts that.

He's fairly young (47) so he's a strong choice for Governor in 2018, or Pat Roberts's seat in the Senate in 2020, given his outsize national profile.

LOL Kris Kobach. He won't run for President and he certainly won't try primarying someone as conservative himself as Jerry Moran. He seems like the kind of guy who would like to stay in Kansas and whether Brownback wins re-election this year or not, 2018 is Kobach's opportunity to run for the open seat or against Davis.

Kobach is being eyed as a potential VP choice for Trump. It's possible. Trump/Kobach would be doubling down on white voters.
