The one-star general pleading guilty to a bunch of lesser charges, but maintains innocence on the most damning allegation of sexual assault.... Innocent or not this is not how you clean up the reputation of military, especially as deals with the large numbers of sexual assaults among the rank and file.

It means he thinks that the prosecutors may be overreaching and going to trial with a weak case.  It can be reasonably argued that a failure to convict would be worse than not bringing the case.  Since I have no idea as to the strength of the case, and certainly would not base it on what the defense attorney is alleging it to be in the press, I'll reserve judgement.

And now there are accusations that officials in the Pentagon are meddling in this case... complete with emails from Pentagon officials who have no standing, attempting to interfere in a decision by the military prosecutor.

And now there's been a plea deal... Brigadier Gen. Jeffery Sinclair will plead guilty to adultery (which is a crime in the military). Sinclair will face up to fifteen years in prison and dismissal from the Army, however he likely will receive a lesser sentence.
