In the likelihood of Tea Party darling, State Senator Dan Patrick (R-Houston) wins the May 27th runoff election over three-term incumbent Lieutenant Governor David Dewhurst (R) and defeating State Senator Leticia Van de Putte (D-San Antonio) in November, Patrick is one massive heart attack away from the TX Governor's Mansion if something horrible were to happen to Governor Abbott.

Now that is very SCARY.

Your thoughts ?

Due to Abbot being disabled, I'm afraid that he *could* be that close.

Not a whole lot, I do think Patrick is slightly more conservative though.

Isn't the Texas Lt. Governor a stronger office than the Governor anyway?

Tis true. At least when it comes to the Legislative branch.

What?  He's a paraplegic; he's not stricken with cancer or something.

Okay, that does not mean another health issue stemming from that could and would not pop up in a four year term.

He's a paraplegic because of an accident in his youth, not some sort of disease.

The accident was over 25 years ago at that point; it would be extraordinary if any sort of complication did arise.

Much. The Texas Governorship is largely a ceremonial post. The Lieutenant Governor wields much more power in practice.

Think about it: Dubya delegated much power to Dick Cheney.

Yep. Rick Perry controlled a more powerful political machine than the average Texas Governor partly because he was around long enough to stack every spot on every board and agency with yes-men appointees. In general though, the Lt. Governor is going to wield much more power by controlling the legislative agenda.

Patrick reminds me of Francis Underwood of Netflix's House of Cards: someone who is ruthless and manipulative to rise to the very top of Texas' political food chain.

You are drastically overestimating Mr. Goeb Patrick's intelligence.
