It might have actually been AirAsia, but I distinctly recall some Muslims got offended because the airline's uniforms were "not in line with Malay and Islamic culture" and then Richard Branson dressed up in drag... wait, no, it was AirAsia. But I know they serve alcohol in the lounges.

EDIT: Oh boo hoo, they look great.

Iranian? Surely that raises the probability, not lowers it?

The quote was that "like Balotelli, a person's nationality may not be what their appearance might suggest," not that the guy looked like Balotelli. Substandard Buzz-feed-esque modern journalism at work.

I give it 1:12 odds it was the Russians trying to distract everyone.

I'm beginning to wonder about the possibility that say Malaysian military shot it down by mistake and doesn't want to admit it. Tongue

I was thinking the same thing, but with Vietnam.

Here's an interesting theory:

So that knocks out the transponder, and also decompresses the cabin, leaving everyone unconscious.  But the plane is still mostly intact, and so the autopilot keeps flying the plane, while everyone's unconscious/dead.  It eventually crashes into the ocean, but by that point it's very far away from the last point at which the transponder was working, so it's nowhere near wherever they're searching for it.

This reminds me to what happened to Helios Airways Flight 522, actually, the general idea of decompression occurring but the plane keeping up the autopilot. Of course, in that case, it was the cockpit that was affected and it was a loss of oxygen and not so much decompression.

But why would the Malaysian military shoot down a plane from their own country ?

Makes not much sense ...

Accident? I think it's worse considering a combination of theories... that the plane had gone off in some random direction and was unresponsive, and then someone had shot it down.

Everything in the world will be a bit better when everybody stops trying to be an internet investigator/detective.

This is correct.

A rather revealing cartoon:

Apparently this is a religious ceremony:

And a telling article:

I was going to spew some nonsense conspiracy theory (namely that the plane was diverted to Eastern Russia or one of the 'stans in secret to distract from events in the Ukraine) but this is more outlandish than anything I could have ever thought of... right now the plane seems to be a sort of pin ball zinging around Asia.

This is why heightened security at airports, another Patriot Act, and armed federal officers on our flights. At least a quarter of the total number of passengers should be there for security.

...you're advocating an American Stasi? That would do wonders for ticket prices. Roll Eyes

Meanwhile, some support for my zany conspiracy theory:

At this point- why not? The evidence is pointing to the plane having been landed somewhere.

This is hardly something thought only by them, however.

But no background checks for ukrainians and russians.... MORE PROOF! I'd say I'm at 35% certainty of my conspiracy theory.

Presumably the awful way in which Malaysian authorities have handled certain things with the relatives is linked to the usual racism stuff?

I was under the impression it was just general lack of consideration/ineptitude.

Just wanted to remind us all of how wrong all the theories were. Internet experts lose yet again.
