France has no doubt made many mistakes in attempting to enforce secularism in recent years. The niqab ban was pretty stupid and contributed to alienating a good number of Muslims. I'm more conflicted on the 2004 law on religious signs at school (because come on, public school is not the place to express your religious beliefs) but in practice its enforcement had to be problematic.

The core of the issue, of course, is the fact that many politicians use secularism as a pretense to stigmatize Muslims and stir up hatred against them. And of course these politicians are the same who criticize secularism when it goes against their ultra-Catholic buddies... So the problem isn't really with secularism as much as it is with xenophobia.

Obviously Romney is a terrible person to deliver the message, but poverty is a very important issue that the GOP needs to focus on. As they increasingly rely on Appalachia, they need to convey how they believe their solutions will "fix" poverty. Nobody "likes" poverty, people just disagree on the means it can be fixed. Obviously as a green I disagree with right-wing solutions for poverty and inequality, but the GOP has so far never laid out a clear road map for any solution to the problem.

A fair and reasoned analysis of the GOP's economic woes.

I'll do Canada.

1896: Tories lose their dominance in Quebec over the French schools question.

1921: The Progressive party places 2nd in response to Western alienation over tarrifs, government aid etc.. Two-party system is gone forever.

1935: Social Credit and the CCF emerge as socon and socialist responses to the Great Depression.

1958, 1962: Social Credit begins winning seats in Quebec. The Western/Anglo Socreds replaced by the Tories. The NDP contests their first election in 1962.

1984: Mulroney wins a landslide with a broad base including Western populists, Eastern establishment types and Quebec nationalists

1993: Mulroney coalition implodes as populist and French nationalist wings become Reform and Bloc Quebecois respectively.

2004: Progressive Conservatives and Reform merge. NDP shut out of Sasketchewan indicating that their prairie roots are waning.

2011: NDP sweeps Quebec. Liberal coalition cut down to trendy urban areas, English Montreal, and parts of Atlantic Canada.

I consider Canadian politics to be the most interesting in the Anglosphere.

A very informative post for an American.

As for anecdotal evidence I once came across a joke book from the 1980s about "true Vermonters" versus the new migrants from NYC and elsewhere which made it clear "true Vermonters" were conservative Republicans and while expressing some respect for then-Mayor Bernie Sanders also hoped that he'd stop being a socialist and never run for a higher office such as the Senate.

What I meant is that no one should feel personally offended by a cartoon mocking their religion.

Why not? If there's a right to offend then surely there must also be a right to be offended. Which is, needless to say, completely different from a right to firebomb offices and/or gun down people at an editorial meeting.

I can't control other people's feelings, obviously. The point was that I strongly dislike the ideological ramifications of such feeling.

Such feeling is a natural outflow of feeling personally attached to one's religion, rather than just giving it some sort of dry intellectual assent.

OK, I'm not religious, so my knowledge of this is somewhat limited, but I'm pretty sure that there are many Catholics who take their faith seriously and yet don't give a damn about Charlie Hebdo's cartoons making fun of Jesus or the Pope. How would the fact that someone is making fun or your faith diminish it in any way? At most, your reaction could be one of pity toward the cartoonists if you believe God will punish them eventually.

On a serious note, I sometimes think that if one girl bothered to have pity sex with him, then maybe those six people would still be alive today.

That's beyond disgusting.

Anyway, I was tested at a 142 IQ and spent my entire elementary, middle, and high school careers in gifted and honors programs.
So how much did your parents pay for the IQ test results?

Scalia doesn't rhyme with Paella unless you're mispronouncing one of these words.

Pro-sex, as long as it's within marriage.  Anti-sex if it's not.

Anti-sex by the forum's definition I'd imagine.
This.

Great post, and not just for the Watchmen reference.

To be honest, if we get to this point, I wouldn't care enough to choose between them. I'd say f**k it, if these morons want Le Pen, let's give them Le Pen.
As much as I dislike Sarkozy, voting for a fascist candidate who has endorsed Vladimir Putin and wants to turn France into an aryan paradise is insanity.

OK, I'll really get to my main point.

The issue is that I'm sick and tired at European far-right parties gaining more and more ground, defining more and more the public discourse and thus influencing policy to a degree superior to any other "government party", all while keeping their hands clean and continuing to claim they're the victims of the big bad establishment. It's pretty clear that the morons who make up a majority of the electorate are foaming to see these bastards in power, and the only reason this hasn't happened yet is because some of them still have a few scruples. So I say f**k it, let's give them what they want! We'll see how great that turns out to be! I'm sick and tired of having to explain (directly or indirectly) to morons why the FN in power would be a catastrophe. If they're too stupid to figure it out, they will have to learn it the hard way. The accumulated filth of all their fascism and xenophobia will foam up about their waists and all the morons will look up and shout "Save us!"... and I'll look down and whisper "No."

...OK, sorry, that ripoff was really lame and I should be ashamed. Tongue But you get the idea.
