the democrats becoming something along the lines of the Working Families Party and the republicans similar to the Constitution Party?

My theory is that the New Dems and the Republican Main Street Partnership types are atrophying in population or at least being swamped by the "grassroots conservatives" and "community leaders" due to dysgenesis.

In this dystopian future, both parties see each other as victims and the other as the cause of their calamities. Political dialogue almost becomes feral. Turnout improves but not because of an interest in politics per se but because more is at stake and the hope of despoiling the opposition.

There is only so much "weird" the political middle will take.  If it's Goldwater vs. McGovern a couple cycles in a row, that would be the best opportunity in decades for a 3rd party.  There would be a huge opening for a Manchin/Collins style independent ticket.

How are the GOP and the Constitution Party any different on domestic policy, really?

The Constitution Party is more consistently opposed to government surveillance, along with wanting to get rid of the income tax IIRC.

I don’t think that is very likely. If the Democrats were to turn sharply to the left, the Republicans would be more than happy to fill the void in the center. That is at least what happened during the 1960s and 1970s (or at least the Dems were perceived to turn hard left). The same thing would happen if the Republicans turned into something like the Constitution Party.

If both parties tacked toward their respective extremes, then (as Skill and Chance said), some new party would appear. Such an event would of course shatter one of the two parties of today.
