Let's say Texas Governor Ann Richards (D) decides not to seek reelection in 1994 due to sensing political backlash against Clinton in a national GOP revolution because of the unpopularity of Hillarycare.

The TX Dems decide to rally behind former Texas State AG Jim Mattox (D), who loses to Bush Jr., by double digits: 55-43.

Here's how Texas politics would have been impacted:
1998: Bush Jr., wins reelection big over Mauro: 68-31
2000: Bush elected President, resigns on Dec. 21, 2000 and Perry succeeds him as governor.
2002: Perry easily wins full term over Tony Sanchez, 57-39
2006: In wild four-way race, Perry wins reelection with 39 percent
2010: Perry wins reelection over White, 55-42
2014: Does not seek reelection to 4th term, Abbott defeats Davis, 56-41
