... even if Boehner and his party don't really care about the first four of those.

Methinks Boehner hasn't thought this entirely through, considering the kinds of people the Pope has been railing against for the last year.

He probably knows well enough -John Boehner is not known for being either stupid or ignorant.  This is just a gesture of good-will on his part, from one Catholic to another.

Part of me thinks that Francis clearly has far better things to do but part hopes that he comes and spends the entire address talking about Dorothy Day or something.

I think we should invite Ian Paisley instead.

If the Pope does come to address Congress, he'll sound a lot more like Elizabeth Warren then he will any Republican.

It might surpass the Super Bowl in tv ratings.......I'd watch it from start to stop.  The pubs would be squirming in their seats.  Smiley

I would absolutely love to see this. The Pope is a rad guy, but I don't know why so many Republicans are all of a sudden acting like they care the first thing about the elderly, the poor, etc.

Clearly Boehner has been compromised by the dark tentacles of Popish influence in the americas.
You sound like what a lot of the conservatives in my church would say.  They would say that prophecy has been fulfilled by this.

It is rather amazing that:

- The Vice President is an RC
- The President pro Tempore of the Senate is an RC.
- The Speaker of the House and the Minority Leader are both RCs.
- 6/9 SCOTUS judges are RCs.

I wonder what Al Smith's opponents would think if they had a time machine and they knew that.

Most of Al Smith's opponents weren't against him because of Catholicism and didn't believe in any Papal conspiracy theories. It's like saying most anti-Obama people are against him because he's black, it was a motivating factor amongst a lot of the uneducated population and redneck types but it certainly wasn't the primary factor or motivation of the core opposition to him. 1928 was going to be a Republican year no matter what as well.
