I believe Nixon was in denial about being removed from office until the very end.  Nixon wanted to pick John Connally, but his wheeler-dealer image was a handicap.  Ford was the safe pick.

I also believe, FWIW, that if Nixon celebrated Alexander Butterfield's revelation of his taping system by having a world class bonfire on the White House lawn burning all of the tapes, he would never have been impeached.  There would have been weeping, gnashing of teeth, and a dive in approval ratings, but there would have been no impeachment and no resignation.
