I'm not defending Fred Phelps obviously. I'm just pointing out that his death is ultimately minor (and I don't celebrate anyone's death, but that's for another post).

That seems almost as bad those cheering his death.  Not the praying, but the publicly calling attention to it.

Why do people care about this guy?

Since we live in a capitalist society, unpleasantness sells.
It is more about the human fascination with unpleasantness
and making money by exploiting that, than about a
man who once existed named Fred Phelps.

It's not 'edgy' to say that when you die, you die. He'll be remembered for being a disgrace to the species for a while. Then he'll be forgotten.  That's the biggest f-ck you you can get.

By the way, this probably won't be the end of the Westboro church.
His wife is very much involved in his 'cause', as are others; I don't follow
it that much other than what I have occasionally seen it on the news, so I don't know
how long his church will last.
