WBC spokesman said Fred Phelps Sr. was 'healthy' a month before he entered hospice
WBC spokesman: Church doesn't have a designated leader of church, adding WBC doesn't operate that way

You got to admit he was a very effective attention whore.

I'm not defending Fred Phelps obviously. I'm just pointing out that his death is ultimately minor (and I don't celebrate anyone's death, but that's for another post).

So on one hand you refuse to celebrate the death of Fred Phelps...on the other hand you want to fill the streets with the blood of the bourgeoisie?

I really hope there isn't protests, probably a good way to show who the truly 'good' people are.

I do not glory in the imminent death of anyone, however, don't let the door hit your ass on the way out.

Oh, that guy.  For some reason I was thinking Michael Phelps, and wondered what this was doing in the religion section. Tongue

Doing what is necessary is different from celebrating said necessary deeds, comrade. Tongue

Same here.

I share Ernest's hope. It's not what I expect, but it's what I hope.

Hopefully the gay community will respond like the former miners. Or they could do the "bigger person thing." Either things cool with me.

A part of me wants to buy a plane ticket and fly over to picket his funeral with signs like "Fags love Haters" but that would be hypocritical.

Our chuch's seminary intern stated from the pulpit Sunday that she and her partner were praying for Phelps in deference to the Bible teaching us to love our enemies.

That is all.

That seems almost as bad those cheering his death.  Not the praying, but the publicly calling attention to it.

Oh, wow.

Fred Phelps was reportedly excommunicated from Westboro Baptist Church for advocating a 'kinder approach' between church members

So remember, kids - when you condemn an entire group of people to eternal hell, do it with kindness. Smiley

He'll get the same afterlife as everyone else (which is to say none).

Since we live in a capitalist society, unpleasantness sells.
It is more about the human fascination with unpleasantness
and making money by exploiting that, than about a
man who once existed named Fred Phelps.

It's not 'edgy' to say that when you die, you die. He'll be remembered for being a disgrace to the species for a while. Then he'll be forgotten.  That's the biggest f-ck you you can get.

By the way, this probably won't be the end of the Westboro church.
His wife is very much involved in his 'cause', as are others; I don't follow
it that much other than what I have occasionally seen it on the news, so I don't know
how long his church will last.
