Speaking of which, when did Sweden allow openly gay soldiers?

It seems so facile to me to rush to judgment on a matter like this. Why do our judgments matter? They don't. None of us have any say here. This is one of the most important world events of this century so far and it's something that people will be reading about in history books three hundred years from now, so why is it that people feel so compelled to declare FFs and HPs? Can't we talk about this without the need to make intellectually sterile moral judgments?

How rigged was the referendum? Was it turning 55% yes into 95% yes, or was it more like turning 35% yes into 95% yes?

It didn't really have to be rigged, given that most opponents of annexation just boycotted. Of course, the fact that Ukraine was already under military occupation certainly nudged things towards the Yes side more than a fully free referendum would have.

Okay, maybe Mike Johnson is a competent parliamentarian.

Probably closer to the former, but Snowstalker's right that it didn't really have to be rigged as such.

Terrible, as is the Russification of most things.

It's very difficult to have a fair referendum with Russian troops on your soil. My heart goes out to the Cossacks, who have been drifting back since the early 90's and will soon be 'stateless' yet again.

I think a free and fair referendum would still have returned something like at least 60% Yes.

Cossacks? Maybe you meant Crimean Tatars?
