Balmy now, but one last winter blast early next week before spring really begins towards the end of March.

Today was good.  It broke 60 and stayed that way much of the day.  Sunny with a mild breeze.  Lots of people in shorts today.  We bicycled a bit.  Afterwards I broke out the waterhose for the first time since November and sprayed the various metal, plastic, and cloth amenities in the back yard, ridding them of birdshit.  Then my son and I pulled the twigs and leaves from his sandbox and got sandy.  We considered planting, but decided to wait another month or so for the frost.

After the heavy, wet snow Thursday night into yesterday mid-day quickly froze into snowcrete, it drifted on strong winds up to 40mph.

It got to -4F (-20C), about 25F below the average and we had a high of 10F (-12C) with sunny skies.  The only consolation was the snow in the trees which made everything white (and also reflected sunlight making it colder).

A low of -7F is expected tonight (-22C) with slowly moderating temperatures through the middle of the week.  It will remain colder than average for the foreseeable future.

I had thought because this winter showed so many similarities to 1917/18 that we might get the wonderful March warm-up that capped off what had been a truly horrendous winter for the eastern U.S. at the time... but no such luck.

Because of the cold in March so far and continued bouts of temps 15-30F below average means that November 2013-March 2014 could be the coldest on record here.

In contrast, the warmest November-March occurred recently, in 2011/12.

Three days ago, it was sunny with a ~70ºF high. Today, we've had a 32ºF high and a 1/2 inch of snow...
