The Myth of the California Renaissance
http://www.city-journal.org/2014/cjc0314bb.html

I believe quite firmly that Jerry Brown has done a great job as governor but the fact is the Assembly has dragged down a lot of necessary reform. There is still an excessive amount of regulation and required and allowed public input and for me the situation with CAHSR is the prime example of this.

California can't recover until Californians want to recover. They've given no such indication. Fat people voting for the political platform of fitness, then demanding more Twinkies.

Good luck, California. The last of my family manned the life boats over a decade ago.

How surprising that a conservative magazine thinks that California's comeback is overrated.

While California's recovery may not be complete yet, it's as inaccurate to call the state's current rebound a myth. Unemployment here is plunging, along with the rest of the nation. Yes, manufacturing jobs are not coming to the state en masse, but the future of California's (and the U.S.) economy is not manufacturing. California is a place for ideas, whether that's a high-tech startup being lured to Santa Monica's Silicon Beach to Hollywood's growing online video industry.

Texas should enjoy those manufacturing jobs while they last. PS: Good luck getting Tesla to build that plant there.

The current drought stinks, but that's weather, not politics. Meanwhile, we have our first balanced budget in forever. That's a pretty huge deal, thank you very much, and it wasn't done by slashing services to the bone.

California is heading in the right direction and the future is incredibly bright.

But of course, it isn't happening "fast enough" and so the concern trolls are out demanding course be reversed.

If California is doing badly, then Texas is a failed state.

Solidly Democratic, LGBT friendly, and a rebounding economy. Sign me up. I need to get out of this Republican hell ASAP.

Democrats control all statewide offices, plus have two thirds in both houses of the legislature and California is doing better than it has in years.

Right-wing concern trolling. I'm surprised it's not a Politico piece...
