I go through them pretty quickly. 1-3 months seems about accurate, except for those few instances where they miraculously survive for around 9 months.

I have pretty good earbuds and as such they last for ages. Investing in good products makes sense.

I just buy the $8 ones at Wal-Mart. Usually I end up losing them or inadvertently leaving them in my pocket and sticking them in the laundry before they stop working.

Don't use them.  I enjoy this thing called silence.  You might want to try it sometime.

I voted for the maximum category. But that's really because the ones I have came free with a phone, laptop or other piece of tech and I don't use them. That gives them an indefinitely long lifetime.

That just means I bought the last $8 pair of earbuds that were hanging on an otherwise empty shelf. Then I stood in line to pay for 20 minutes behind a line of people in motorized scooters struggling to breathe as they thrust their 2-liter soda bottles and frozen pizzas onto the checkout belt.

My brother's pair seems to break every other week, but my pair (the ones that came with my I-Pod) have lasted for a few years.

This prick that is in my art class has the Beats headphones, and they are the most obnoxious, pointless, and overbearing things I have ever encountered. They are so loud that you might as well play your music without headphones, because everyone else can hear it clearly. The headphones, his massive gas guzzler pickup truck that he spends way too much of his mother’s income on, his need to change clothes before the bell rings so he can walk fifteen seconds across campus out of uniform, and his generally d-bag personality have permanently turned me off from any kind of headphones that cost more than five bucks.

Most of my earbuds were destroyed because I accidentally stepped on them.  I bought a new pair about every 6 months.  Since then, I found my old headphones that came with my guitar amp in 2005, and they still work pretty well.

That kid sounds like a massive tool. The Dr Dre headphones are an overpriced POS. They're a way for dumbasses to help identify each other in crowded areas. However, a good pair of headphones (not stupid earbuds) is worth the money. Just do your research and don't pay for anything that audiophiles cream their pants for (audiophiles are delusional).

Earbuds in my possession typically last 7-8 months, after which I either end up stepping on them or losing them.

I've only ever had one pair fall apart on me and those were the ones that came with my first iPod several years ago. The earbuds that I got with my iPhone 4 over three years are still in great condition. I find that things generally last longer if you treat them reasonably well.

I live with three teenagers that don't respect other people's property very much....so <1 month would be the norm.  If I can keep them hidden pretty well (mainly by never letting them know I have a working set) I can get 6 months out of them, but eventually my security practices get sloppy.

...oh and we have a puppy too.  He's taken care of a few.

I used to go through earbuds about as quickly as Goldwater, but then I invested in a pair of over-ear headphones. Not only is the sound quality far superior, but they'll probably end up being cheaper in the long run.

Don't use them.  I enjoy this thing called silence.  You might want to try it sometime.

On behalf of people with tinnitus, I find this post offensive.

Since many (tho not all) people with tinnitus wouldn't have it if they had been in a quieter environment to begin with, they really should have tried it while they had the chance.

I had an $80 pair of Klipsch earbuds that failed after about 10 months due to bad wiring. My friend had the same exact problem with his pair. Very disappointed, but good sound while they last.

My latest headphone purchase (just a few weeks ago) was the Sol Republic Tracks Air. It's an over-the-ear model that runs via Bluetooth. They're super comfortable on the ears and have a very pleasing aesthetic. I'm satisfied so far, though they're rather expensive.

Not having cables to get in the way is a surprisingly enjoyable benefit.
