I honestly don't really know what it is they do or what their purpose is.  I'm sure they attract powerful people... but whatever.  We have a freemason lodge here... and it is most often used as a place to put on plays and shows for the community.

Huh?

The Anti-Masonic Party was functionally an anti-Jacksonian outfit more than anything, and the Mason panic was a tie-in to some contemporaneous silliness in the Burned-Over district, plus the fact that Jackson was a Mason and that was thus a good line of attack to "other" him.

Wirt in fact gave a speech at the convention where he basically said "Masons are pretty okay people".  What IndyTX says is true, and is in fact one of of my favorite wacky factoids from that era.

I'd be generous to myself and say 'ineffectual' rather than fake. In addition, I am led to believe that both my grandfather and great-grandfather on my dad's side (who were Anglicans) were freemasons, so I can't vote HO obviously...

I inherited a ring that my grandfather welded with their emblem on it because he was a member. So I feel obligated to say FO.

I don't know much about them though so I didn't actually vote in the poll.
