No.

Human beings have free will, and are morally-entitled to negative rights. Positive rights and entitlements are privileges bestowed upon societies who've earned them. The should only be granted if they contribute to future economic development.

No (I).  They have nothing to do with copyright so why you would think they were a moral right? Tongue

More seriously, while social benefits are something governments should consider doing as a means of improving the well being of individuals, society, and the economy, they aren't a civil right.

No, of course not. They are a privilege granted by being a citizen of and paying taxes to the state.

This, at least up to a certain point. Depends how exactly "social benefits" are defined, of course.

I do not believe in the existence of rights objectively derived from nature and the will of God. Our rights as human beings can be whatever we want them to be. So, "Is entitlement to social benefits a moral right?" Technically no, because morality is subjective and so are rights. But do I think there are social benefits that ought to be considered human rights? Absolutely.

No vote in the poll for me in this thread, since I am still in the (I/O) crowd.

Society wouldn't exist without entitlements. A mother must entitle her offspring for it to survive. Society must entitle its population for its population to thrive.

I'm no philosopher, so don't laugh me down...
Aren't moral and human rights the same thing? (At least two sides of the same coin?)

I use them interchangeably, sure.

The only people who don't believe in entitlements on some level are Social Darwinists. Their number is negligible and they are stupid.

There's literally no reason why in an advanced and prosperous society like ours anybody should not have decent food and shelter or healthcare or security in old age, unemployment, and disability.

Whenever someone says "literally no reason", they're probably speaking specifically from their ideological lens, in which case, of course there's no reason to disagree with yourself.

No but social welfare programs are good to have. The problem is that ever since Obama took office we've had a growing entitlement mentality among the ghetto community and it's going to reach it's way to us if we don't go something.

Yes, it's a deeply loaded question....

Basically, it's fair to receive something if YOU get it and it's an evil 'entitlement' if someone else gets it.

It seems like you're being sarcastic which is fine but unfortunately this is the attitude of a lot of people. What I hear people saying pretty often is they're taking our money and when asked what they mean their response is something like "look at them that's supposed to be our money for us."

They are indeed stupid (and that's a pretty kind way to put it), but their numbers are far from negligible, at least in the US.

having a right to life implies having a right to (at the very least) food, shelter, and healthcare.

there's no moral excuse for a highly developed country not to guarantee a subsistence-plus lifestyle to all of its citizens/residents, if that's what you mean.
