An NRCC email has branded Braley as "The 2014 Todd Akin"

Because insinuating farmers aren't law experts = Insinuating women who get pregnant from rape are lying.

This gaffe, like all gaffes, is way overblown.

What an awful ad, Republicans deserve to lose if this is what they're throwing out there. A more effective ad would LITERALLY just be the clip.

Before Republicans gloat too hard, rest assured that a Republican candidate will top this before November.

Chris McDaniel's "I don't know if I could have voted for Katrina relief" is an objectively worse gaffe than this, although he probably won't be a Republican nominee.

Just when we thought it got a tad risky for Democratic chances here, Joni Ernst, the Republican front runner for the nomination gives Mitch McConnell a run for his money because she released one of her first ads stressing how she wants to repeal Obamacare and castrates pigs for a living. She's also being endorsed by Mitt Romney himself who can be connected to Braley for their "secret" video tapes, so yeah....I'm keeping this at likely D then.

Only an idiot talks about castration in an ad and compares it to going to Congress. If this is a powerhouse candidate, I would hate to see a bad one.
Oh I'm not done though! I just found out that Sarah Palin endorsed Ernst today saying, "If Nebraska’s Deb Fischer can see through the bull in Washington, then Iowa’s Joni Ernst can help her cut through the pork." And she's likely to be the nominee, to. Schaben's, Clovis' and Whitaker's chances are low and have failed to gain traction and her only real competition will be against well-funded and wealthy Mark Jacobs, so he's their only hope for the GOP not to screw up this race here. The problem for Jacobs is if this primary goes to convention, Ernst will get nominated for sure and we can keep this in the Democratic column despite the gaffe.

As a Midwesterner with family from IA, I actually think Ernst's ad is pretty good. I think it can be effective to introduce the candidate to the IA voter with little backlash in the general election.

I mean, he's right. What the hell is a farmer doing in Congress? But you're obviously not allowed to say that.
To answer your question. it's called Democracy. A "Farmer" (considering the rest of his resume, are we really going to choose to identify Sen. Grassley as just a farmer?) is in congress because most of the state loves the guy and votes for him. And no, you are in fact allowed to ask that, most choose not to however because they do not want to sound like a moron who's head is stuck up his ass.

How progressive of you. Yes, the farmers should stay in the fields and the factory workers should stay in the factories. Congress should just be the elite who read about them in textbooks in college so.

the average farmer should have a much better understanding of middle/working-class issues than the average lawyer or venture-capitalist or whatever other congresspeople usually are.

Not gone yet but we go right back to where we were right after Harkin's retirement was announced- Tossup Tilt/D... This kind of gaffe can only help Republicans, Grassley is popular here and Braley has a history of this stuff which can be used against him. About the only thing that helps Braley is no one knows who his opponents are (and this is with a month to the primary)

Thank God the Republican field is so awful that Braley will still win.  If Tom Lathem were running, we'd be f***ed.

There's no may in it, Braley will win. Republicans are being way too bullish on this seat and some Democrats are ready to just give it away. Next month, no one is going to give a crap about this.

braley's comments weren't being critical of a farmer in office, it was that someone with no law experience could chair the Judiciary Committee.

She's pretty awful, judging by the lamb castration ad she put out. I feel like Mark Jacobs or Matt Whittaker could take on Braley, but Ernst v. Braley would end up in a Braley win.

Braley tries to defend his credibility on farming, but misspells basic farming terms.

And Braley was found to have skipped twice as many votes as her.

Moving on.

If no one wins 35% in the primary it goes to convention.
