That's probably not the best thing to say when you're running in a Senate race... In Iowa.

He's (Braley) jumping on these comments quickly, not sure that'll work, but its probably the right way to go.

I'm guessing "Iowa farmer " isn't the best insult to use in Iowa

Unless I'm confusing him with someone else, this is not the first time he's said things he probably shouldn't have. The towel thing during the shutdown and I think something about the Trail of Tears comes to mind?

He's essentially right, Grassley has no business chairing the Judiciary committee. Grassley would rule it as a pure partisan.

He should have said it better though.

The easy spin that could be made here is that he thinks an elitist lawyer could serve Iowa better than a hard-working farmer. It's still not big, but the door has opened a little bit wider for Republicans here.

This......is bad. He just had his own Romney moment, only "farmers from Iowa" instead of the "47%."

Thankfully the GOP candidates are awful, but as they build name ID and the IA GOP tries to destroy Braley with this tape, this shifted right back to lean D which puts a drastic wound on yet another seat we'll need to put money into. To make it worse, Grassley has a 62% favorable rating among voters. A lot of pessimism and fear to he's offering that crowd by offering up the idea that Dems could lose the Senate and Grassley becomes Judiciary Chairman. This would help him if there were more lawyers than farmers, but yeah, I'm not happy about this.

If only there was a GOP candidate who could make something out of these remarks, enough to make it matter in November.

Who's going to be the hack who moves the race to toss-up over this?

No one will care in the end, who really even knows who is on committees in Congress other than hardcore political followers? Besides that, how is this going to be put into an ad? A farmer really isn't qualified to chair the Judiciary Committee, it just doesn't make sense.

This is an unbelievably stupid comment and will likely cost him votes, but Braley's had a pretty big lead the whole time and there's month of Republican bloodbath primary to go, so it probably won't cost him the seat.

Of course, as we saw in 2012, one stupid comment can not only cost a seat, but cost seats in other states as well. Hopefully the media in Iowa will let this go pretty soon.

I used to think the media had a bad case of "librul bias." But as I read more into Nixon, and from using my basic God given senses, I have pretty much awakened to the obvious fact about the media: they are bloodsucking contrarians. They won’t let this go unless the Republican says something worse (which can happen, of course). Will this blow the election for Braley? Of course not, but it’s enough to create an opening for the GOP.

One guy saying some elitist bullsh*t isn't comparable to multiple people trivializing one of the worst things someone can do. There will be no ripple.

Hopefully not, but remember that Murdock's comments probably wouldn't have gotten much press if Akin hadn't already created the "Republicans say horrible things about rape" meme. If this story bubbles for a while, some other Democrat in Colorado or whatever might say something relatively innocuous but kinda elitist and all of a sudden it turns into a national "Democrats are elitist!" meme that affects races all of the country.

Probably won't happen. But it is so important that Democrats retain the Senate that I'm going to be pretty nervous about it.

Just when we thought it got a tad risky for Democratic chances here, Joni Ernst, the Republican front runner for the nomination gives Mitch McConnell a run for his money because she released one of her first ads stressing how she wants to repeal Obamacare and castrates pigs for a living. She's also being endorsed by Mitt Romney himself who can be connected to Braley for their "secret" video tapes, so yeah....I'm keeping this at likely D then.

Yes, these white liberals really don't like salt of the earth folk. Not really news.

Who really does like the dirty workers though?

Is this an awful and elitist thing to say?  Of course.  Is Braley in any danger due to the comment?  Nope.  A Ken Buck moment this is not.  What worries me is the chance of Braley saying something like this again as he has a history of these sorts of comments.

I don't think elitism flies very well in Iowa. Hopefully he learns from this.

The other good thing is that this happened early well before most folks start tuning in.
