This thread made me try it and I beginners lucked into 1024 on my first attempt but haven't been able to figure it out since

Beaten it pretty quick, less than a week. I'm now at 33,000+, but haven't climbed to 4096 for a single block. I'm amazed at how many people I see playing it in the subway, without any method. You have to be consistent.

2048 is a sub-par knockoff of an incredible game called Threes.

the trick is basically pick one direction that you will never use, and keep the biggest square on the opposite side and in the corner if possible

That actually helped quite a bit. It's not a perfect strategy, especially since there's randomness in where the next blocks appear. I did have two 2048 blocks, but wasn't able to combine them into a 4096.
